DCA the Pan African Universities Debating Championships

Dear Debating community
I am very excited to announce that applications to DCA the Pan African Universities Debating Championships are now officially open. The tournament will be held at TUT and is scheduled to run from the 9th till the 16th of December. I urge all as many people to apply and spread the word. We have three DCA positions open. As is tradition the one spot will be allocated to an international DCA, whose travel costs will be covered, with the remaining two spaces open for african applicants. I have to stress however that the positions will be awarded on merit and other relevant criteria such as experience. So make sure you send a kick ass CV.

To officially apply for the positions, please send a full debating CV detailing all your debating/ adjudication experience (make it as colourful and exciting as it can be, but don't lie: BIG BROTHER is watching you). Along with this please send a letter of motivation and a list of 10 original sample motions. With regards to the motions please try and make your topics range from political, economic and social.

I feel it is only fair to outline the various responsibilities that a DCA
will face before and during this tournament:

Following the tragic news about the Namabian teams returning home after PAUDC I decided to hold off posting this as a mark of respect (it felt strange to celebrate the winners given what had happened). To make up for the delay in making the announcement I decided to post during Worlds when the visits to the site are busiest so here are the results from the recent PAUDC.

Our friends from Namibia have been in a serious accident when travelling home from PAUDC 2011. Grant Pesat and their Driver passed away, 19 others are seriously injured.

Let us all take it upon us to pray for God to intervene, such that the injured can have a speedy recovery and for him to comfort the berived families.

For those who are close or who can afford to travel, let us go there and give them moral support. For they are one of us.

A HEAD-ON collision 16 km from Grootfontein claimed the lives of a Polytechnic of Namibia driver and a student yesterday.

According to Deputy Commissioner Ralph Ludwig of the Police's traffic division, the accident took place between 03h00 and 04h00 yesterday morning between Grootfontein and Mururani.

The bus in which the students were travelling crashed "almost head-on" into a truck, he said.

Grant Pesat, a student from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and a Polytechnic driver, Edward Kamutjemo, were killed.

Eighteen people sustained injuries varying from serious to slight, Ludwig said.

Although no arrests have been made, a case of culpable homicide is being investigated, he confirmed.

Donovan Weimers, the Polytecnic's spokesperson, said the passengers included 12 students from the Polytechnic's Debating Society, among them SRC chairperson Gustav Nyambe.

"Six other Namibian students from other tertiary institutions were reportedly also on the bus. In addition, three staff members were on the bus: two drivers and a member of staff in the office of the Dean of Students, who acted as tour chaperone."

Weimers added: "It is with great sadness that we announce that one of the Polytechnic drivers, Mr Edward Kamutjemo, and a student from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Grant Pesatwere, killed in the accident.

"All the remaining passengers were admitted to the Grootfontein hospital for treatment or observation. Some have quite serious injuries, among them two Polytechnic students who were airlifted to Windhoek this afternoon for specialised treatment."

According to Edwin Tjiramba, the spokesperson of the University of Namibia (Unam), three Unam students were involved in the accident.

They are reported to be in a stable condition in the Grootfontein State hospital.

Tjiramba said the students were on their way from Zimbabwe where they had taken part in an international debating competition.

The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund said yesterday that 16 people have died between November 28 and Sunday.

In the same period last year, 12 people had died on Namibian roads.

South African NUDC 2011

Of course while much of the focus in recent days has been on Austral-Asians in Korea we shouldn't forget that South African National University Debating Championships.  Up to the start of the PAUDC this was the largest tournament in Africa.

Zimbabwe PAUDC 2011: DCA applications now open!

Applications are now open for the three Deputy Chief Adjudicator posts at this year’s Pan-African Universities Debating Championship (PAUDC). The tournament will take place in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from 4th – 11th December 2011. The PAUDC 2011 organizing committee will work in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Debating Network and Contemporary Affairs Foundation in hosting the Tournament.


PAUDC is the largest debating tournament in Africa, attracting participants from several countries across the continent. It functions both as a regional tournament and a development project aimed at promoting all levels of university debating in Africa. DCA applicants should therefore keep in mind that, in addition to the usual organisational and judging duties of an adjudication team, they will be expected to be part of developing and running a comprehensive training programme.

We are looking for 3 DCAs for PAUDC 2011. In keeping with the regional nature of the tournament we are committed to regional diversity in our selection. We are also committed to expanding PAUDC as a tournament of international standards and quality. Non-African applicants are therefore welcome. There is also a strong possibility of travel grants for DCAs.

The following commitments and criteria will guide the selection of our DCAs:

A commitment to quality adjudication at PAUDC, with a focus on developing debating in Africa.

A commitment to introducing and maintaining international judging standards in regional debating (WUDC experience would be an advantage).

A solid background in BP debating and/or speaking (WUDC experience would be an advantage).

Organisational experience is a must, but it need not be related to debating.

Applicants should plan to be in Zimbabwe up to a week before the tournament (i.e. from the 27th November 2011). In the months leading up to PAUDC, each DCA will work on a specific aspect of the training programme. It is therefore a requirement that applicants will be easily contactable and ready to work on planning the training programme in this period.

The application process:
Application Phase: 10th May - 15th June
Each application should send a debating CV and a completed DCA application form to the Chief Adjudicator via e-mail (cweley@gmail.com). Applicants will receive e-mail notification upon receipt of their completed application.

Review Phase: 16th June - 29th June
Applications will be reviewed by the CA. If necessary, applicants may be contacted to provide additional information. If candidates are particularly closely matched, the CA may ask for feedback from the wider debating community on two or more applicants (to aid the decision making process).

Announcement: 30th June
Successful applicants will be notified and their names announced on the tournament facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=201169549917040&ref=ts) as well as other online debating forums.

The Pan African Universities Debate Championship (Pan) Executive Council would to report to all that are interested in the affairs of Debating in Africa.


There is a steady stream of activity in the African Continent as we try to turn the tide against youth activism in sponsored violence and being hired guns of dictators. We need now more than ever to foster the culture of debate within this Continent. It is by no means an easy task and requires all hands on deck for this momentous task. Our forefathers have resorted to violence to solve their disputes and today as the youth of Africa we need to change a culture that will destroy this great Continent.


That is why as the Pan Executive Council we are happy that the youth of Africa have come together across Africa to demonstrate that the solutions of this Continent lie in Education and Debate. We therefore announce that the Africa will be a hive of activity with South Africa conducting its 17th National Debating Competition, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria will also be conducting their respective National Competitions. All this activity will lead us to the Prestigious Pan African Universities Debating Championships which will be hosted by Zimbabwe in December 2011.


We invite the world to join us in these respective activities and we can learn from each other.


Africa more that ever needs the culture of Debate as our Continent faces testing times, the Youth need to play a role in its political shape and instead of being weapons, we need to be ideas and intellectual voices of our Continent.

Nigerian Bid Proposal for PAUDC 2011‏

Hello Everyone

Please find attached our Bid proposal for 2011 Pan African University Debating Championship.

The motivation behind this bid is coming from the true spirit of our great heroes in Africa and the need to collaborate and network with each other. It is unfortunate that we lack the true spirit of Pan Africanism in todays young people. Today's youth are fighting for self and not for what Pan- Africa represent.

If you really want a fair participation, representation and integration of all Africans in this umbrella called PAUDC. This is a serious and compelling bid you have to support. We are not here for ethnocentric minds. We are saying that we are the best qualified to host Africa PAUDC in 2011.

Nigeria, Ghana, Sierraleoane, Liberia and Cameroun are all behind this bid and we have agreed to unite and work together in one committee to see our people partake in this noble project. If you support us, you are supporting young leaders in West Africa and Africa. You are supporting the liberation of the minds of our youth who have been suffering from long years of militarization. This is a project to help our region create an OPEN society. Our youth needs this and all Africa needs to integrate into each other's culture.

This is the time for all Africa to learn about West African culture. How many of you know about a soup called "Afam soup" . How many know about "Ekpe"masquerade dance, How many of you know about peculiarities of these cities like Lagos, Accra, Monrovia, Freetown, Younde, Banjul, Dakar e.t.c This is the time to learn about other cultures and you have to stand for what is right and support this bid.

Our team was not able to travel to Namibia to present this bid because they couldn't access South African transit visa. They were stopped at the airport en-route Windhoek. We have to work together to improve PAUDC and we have all the needed organizational ability and personnels needed to organize the best event in the history of the championship. We have assembled the best professionals and people equal to this task.

One of our aim is to use this event to develop the organizational skills of most students in Africa by providing some tips on event and project management. Don't be surprise to receive some training on project management and fundraising on any of the event days.

This bid is not all about regional rivalry, but all about one continent, one people and one- Africa!

We hope that in true spirit of Pan- Africanism, our brothers from Zimbabwe would reason with us and support this bid. The History between South African countries especially Zimbabwe and Nigeria is very strong. Check your liberation struggles and the first country who spent millions of Dollars to support your course is Nigeria. We used that same spirit to allow Namibia to host 2010 event and we expect the same this time around.

Support us today and guarantee a strong future for the continent.

Zimbabwe to bid for PAUDC 2011

Zimbabwe are bidding to host the 2011 Pan African Universities Debating Championships PAUDC). Their bid, along with any others, will be presented and voted on during the upcoming PAUDC in Namabia.

The deadline for late registration is on the 19th November 2010. So registration is still taking place.

So institutions interested in registering additional teams or still want to register their institution are more than welcome. Adjudication slots are still open for both guests and independents judges.

However take note; that limited places are available so reg now to avoid disappointments.

Guest judges at PAUDC

This is a reminder about the guest judge spots available at this year’s Pan African Champs, to be held in Windhoek, Namibia from 4-10 December. If you’re an experienced judge heading to Worlds in Botswana, and you’ll be in the area in early December, we encourage you to think about coming through to our tournament.

PAUDC is a relatively new tournament, aimed at spreading debating in Africa. It’s close to being the largest tournament on the continent (SA Nats is about the same size), and has by far the widest range of teams. The programme is heavy on training and development, but PAUDC also acts as a prep tournament for African teams going to Worlds.

The Org Com has given us a small budget to waive reg fees for suitably experienced judges. If you’re interested, send a mail and CV to Joe Roussos (the CA) at joe.roussos AT gmail.com.

PAUDC 2010: Registration Opens

On behalf of the PAUDC organising committee, it is my pleasure to formally invite you to PAUDC 2010, taking place from December 4th – 11th, 2010 at Windhoek, Namibia.

Debating
All debates will be in standard British Parliamentary format. with an effort to take some debates off campus. There will be a cap of 140 teams. There will be seven preliminary rounds, will then break to Octo-finals. Awards will be given to the champions, finalists, adjudicators and top 5 speakers.

Adjudication team
The Chief Adjudicator of this year’s tournament is Joe Roussos. Joe's accomplishments include: South African National Universities Debating Championship best speaker and Worlds EFL finals judges. Our Deputy Chief Adjudicators will be Harish Natarajan (University of Cambridge) Claire Hawkridhe (former Rhodes and Stellenbosch) Thoriso M-Afrika, (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University).

Their extensive experience are second to their passion which will make this worth attending!

InternationalTeams
We have reserved 20 slots for international teams and that at least 4 judges and teams can break, since it is a fantastic tournament to participate before Worlds 2011 since the distance is minimal and a good training opportunity!

Guest adjudicators
We strongly encourage exposed and experienced judges to this debating championship and we have reduced the fee by half.

2nd Pan-African Universities Debating Championships

The second Pan-African Universities Debating Championships was held at the university of Botswana from the 12th to 18th of December. This year we had 414 participants from 9 different countries.

New this PAUDC!

• Ran concurrent University (80 teams, 6 rounds, octos break) and High School (40 teams, 4 rounds, quarters break) tournaments, both in the British Parliamentary format.
• Passed a constitution and elected an executive committee
• Granted hosting rights for PAUDC 2010 to the University of Namibia and reviewed bids for PAUDC 2011 from Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
• Tournament tabbed on Tabbie

PAUDC Update

Dear PAUDC Participants:

This email is for all PAUDC participants. We are only a few days away from the kickoff of the 2nd annual PAUDC. There are going to be 400 participants this year. We are growing! Please heed the following points when preparing to arrive:

1) Bring your own personal spending money! Food is only provided from supper on December 12. Until that time you are responsible for your own food expense. There are locations on and off campus where food may be bought. Unlike last year we will not be entertaining any requests for food before the scheduled catering times. Meals can be purchased for 15-20 Pula (about 3 USD) on the street or for about 5-7 USD at the malls and cafeterias. Plan accordingly.

2) We will provide transport from the airport to the University. This will be done with buses. Once you arrive at the airport you will find a bus or a PAUDC representative to tell you when the next bus will arrive.

3) If your University or College is delinquent with any portion of registration fees bring it in CASH. NO checks, NO last minute bank transfers. If you don't have cash to pay you probably won't be able to participate or accommodated.

4) There are some expenses you will be expected to pay throughout the tournament. You will have to buy padlocks for 10 Pula. If you want alcohol during the tournament it will be availible for sale. There will be no free alcohol this year. Also for the Concept Party, there is no cover fee but if you want to buy drinks or snacks bring your own cash.

5) It is hot in Botswana right now. It is summer. Bring a small fan if you want.

6) Rooms have internet, so bring an internet cable if you are bringing a laptop. Rooms are two to a person and separated by a partition in the middle of the room. They are quite nicer than last years and we believe you will be pleased! Linens will be provided for your bed, however if you want to bring your own you are allowed to do so.

7) Registration is when you will confirm the spelling and attendance of all people in your delegation. Appoint a head of your delegation now to deal with registration matters. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THIS PERSON KNOW WHO IS DEBATING WITH WHO! Please come prepared to tell the registration director the team pairings for all members of your delegation.
