NALSAR I.V. 2012‏

In 2011, for the first time in India, the NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad brought British Parliamentary debating to these shores, giving Indian debaters the opportunity to compete in the format used by the World Cup of debating – the World Universities Debating Championships. We didn’t just cater to a need, though; the NALSAR Inter-Varsity Parliamentary Debating Championship (“NALSAR I.V”) boasted an internationally renowned Adjudication Core, comprising Suthen ‘Tate’ Thomas, Iqbal Hafiedz, Clive Eley and Nishita Vasan, Rs. 70,000 (USD 1500) in prize money and a break-night event at Aalankrita, Hyderabad’s finest resort.

We promised an event that would stay on the debate calendar; we continue to deliver on that promise with the Westlaw NALSAR I.V. ’12. From the 5th to the 8th of April, join us in Hyderabad to be a part of the Indian BP debate.

This year’s core yet again brings together the finest in international BP adjudication. It comprises a WUDC Chief Adjudicator – Sharmila Paramanand (CA of the Berlin WUDC ’13), champion of the British I.V. circuit – Harish Natarajan and two national debating stalwarts who have made their mark in BP internationally – Aashay Sahay and Pranay Bhatia. Our prize money is currently set at Rs. 1.5 lakh (USD 3000) and, as with the debate, we expect our break-night event to only get better.

Apart from the dazzle, though, we will deliver a great event because of our core values; last year’s I.V. distinguished itself on two fronts in particular. Our scheduling and tabbing was pin-point – our rounds finished well on time, we even made sure we all watched India lift its first World Cup in 28 years. We also made a strong commitment to hospitality – we appreciate your participation and will go out of our way to make sure that you’re comfortable. Further, the NALSAR I.V. ’11 was easy on participants’ pockets; support from Westlaw and Linklaters means we continue to provide the full accommodation and food package at last year’s registration amount.

Join us as we take forward the Indian debate tradition into the world of British Parliamentary. We look forward to hosting you in Hyderabad in April.

Please keep checking the website (www.nalsariv.wordpress.com) and our Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/134897439930337/) for lots more information and updates.

The Xavier's British Parliamentary Debate - Invite

Dear  All,
The Political Science Association (XPSA) of St. Xavier’s College, Bombay (or Mumbai, if you think the Thackerays have a point), with a proud tradition of encouraging progressive thinking, takes great pleasure in inviting you to the Xavier’s British Parliamentary Debate, to be held from the 25th to 27th of November, 2011. This year, we are very proud to bring a new debating format - the British Parliamentary format. Here’s why you should be there:
1) BP Format - this is the format the World Championships, Oxford, Cambridge IVs and many others are debated in. A refreshing change from the predominant Asians 3-on-3 style, the BP format rewards innovative debating and ideas. St. Xavier’s offers this rare opportunity to experience BP debating in India.
2) The Asian BP Championship are less than a fortnight after Xaviers BP - the tournament will be ideal for  preparation.
3) India’s top teams - as of now, we have tentative registrations from some pretty awesome debaters - this will be a very competitive tournament, and certainly one high in quality.
4) Quality Adjudication - We are bringing in India’s top adjudicators, and judges with extensive BP experience. Teams and adjs will find a lot to gain from the training and feedback provided by them.
5) South Bombay aka SoBo - The debate venues and acco will be walking distance from the really cool parts of the city, and the schedule promises enough time to explore it. Good food, great adda joints, party places - we have them all at a walking distance.
FORMAT: British Parliamentary (BP) Debate Format. 5 prelim rounds, break to Semis (ie 8 teams).
TEAM CAP: 24 teams, but based on response and logistics, we MIGHT accommodate a few more teams.
REGISTRATION: Open tournament- cross teams are allowed. Teams participating at Dhaka Asians BP will be prioritized for registration.
ADJUDICATION RULE: N1 rule applies. Each team must bring an adjudicator.
PRIZE MONEY: The total prize money is approximately INR 50,000. We are trying to make it even more lucrative, by continuing to look for further funding to increase that amount.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is available for outstation teams for the duration of the tournament. The acco will be incredibly close to St. Xaviers. We mean it - jump out of bed, fall out the door, and you’re in the venue.
And all of these are at a walking distance from Marine Drive, Leopolds, Gaylord, Pizza by the Bay, Gateway of India, Colaba Causeway, Gokuls, Bade Miyan and the other awesome parts of SoBo. The schedule too has been tailored to ensure that it doesn’t spoil partying opportunities, especially for the many debaters who love late nights and even later mornings.
Registrations have been opened (registration form:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dF9VaURfZ2lhSXdVLXhLUkhldWJ1Vmc6MQ). As of now, we have over 30 teams already. Thus, in case you have not already registered, we suggest that you do so immediately. We shall be confirming and releasing the registration list shortly.
ADJUDICATION CORE
Helping to make the tournament happen will be our Adjudication Core, consisting of Skanda Prasad, Aashay Sahay and Shobhit Singhal.
Skanda Prasad - Skanda has been an active debater for over 3 years now, and has been active both nationally and internationally. He was a DCA at the 2nd Asian Schools Debating Championship (ASDC), the 3rd Malaysia Debate Open (MDO), and broke to the quarterfinals as an adjudicator at UADC-2010. He has BP experience both as a debater and as a judge, having broken as a judge at the Luzon IV in Philippines, and spoke at the Chula Asian BP. He will also be judging at Dhaka ABP as a subsidized adjudicator. Apart from debating, Skanda also has a penchant for preserving his adjudication sheets, which why he has them all stacked up, categorized and in order.
Aashay Sahay (RVCE): There isn’t a tournament that Aashay hasn’t broken at. Aashay has continued an unprecedented streak of breaking at all 4 asian championships - UADC-2010 and 2011 and Asian BP-2009 and 2010. And he’s going to do it again at this year’s Asian BP. He started this streak by breaking at his very first international tournament - the inaugural Asian BP. In the process, he destroyed claims that Indians couldn’t do BP. His national debating profile is too long to print here, but suffice it to say, that as of now, we know of 9 finals that he’s been in a row. He’s no lag at judging either, having judged the finals of RVDT-2010, Mukmem-2011, topped the adj tab at Nalsar BP-2011 and Premchand Debate - 2011 and was CA at RVDT-2011.  He too will be a subsidized judge at Dhaka Asians BP this year.
Shobhit Singhal  (IITB): Back on our adj core this year is Shobhit Singhal, who raised quite a storm (especially among the girls) last year. Last year alone, he was among the top 10 Asian speakers at Botswana Worlds, was finalist at the Bar Council Human Rights Debate (BP) in Malaysia, was a semifinalist at the Asians BP-2010 and the Malaysian Debate Open-2010, and broke at UADC - 2010. His credentials include winning the NLS Debate - 2010, and making it to the finals of the IIT-Delhi PD-2010 among many others. He has also proven his mettle as an adjudicator at the IIT Bombay Debate-2010 and AIL Mohali 2011, where he was adjudged the best adj. ‘Sobbit’ was also adj core at NLU Delhi, IIT Delhi and LSR this year. And lest we forget, all of Asia, and half the world remember his Party Boy avatar from Botswana Worlds.
ADJUDICATION SUBSIDY
With a new format, we understand the challenges involved, and are committed to providing every single team with the best adjudication pool possible. To ensure this, we have allocated funds for providing adjudicator subsidies. We are looking for experienced and committed adjudicators who would be able to demonstrate capability of judging and chairing rounds past the preliminary rounds, as well as being conscientious in providing feedback to teams in helping them learn and gain experience. Experience in the BP format is preferred. We'd like to invite applications for adjudicator subsidy. Please mail your applications with a debating profile to xpsa.pd@gmail.com before 3rd November 2011.

To help with understanding the format, the adj core will be helping by providing training documents and other material online, and will do all they can to help teams and institutions along with the format.
We believe this tournament will provide an ideal platform for teams competing at Asian BP to get some high quality BP practice in a competitive setting, and for other debaters to compete against the best Indian debaters and gain experience in the format that the world debates in. We’re most excited to welcome you all to Bombay.
For any and all clarifications, please feel free to contact us for any help, debating or otherwise. Send in your queries to: xpsa.pd@gmail.com.

q.e.d. 2011, A Parliamentary Debate in Asia

Salutations Debater,

On behalf of BITS-Pilani, the BITS Debating Society takes great pleasure and a sizable amount of pain in extending a hopefully formal invitation to your esteemed institute. This invitation is regarding q.e.d, A Parliamentary Debate in Asia, which will be held from the 4th to 8th of February 2011.

During these four days of breathless action, the sharpest minds from the largest continent in the world will harry and hassle, refute and rebut on worldly topics ranging from 'Rocking horses have undertones of bestiality' to 'The striking similarities between brown and maroon are more than just coincidence'. We obviously feel your esteemed institute will find these topics right up their alley. We've also deliberately used words like 'Salutations' to generate a feeling of antagonism towards us in the hope that it may aid in debating.

In a brief bout of benevolence, we present an FAQ section that will give you any desired information regarding the debate and other things.

Q: Why should I attend q.e.d.?
A: Well, the easy way out would be to say that it is India's biggest and most prestigious parliamentary debating tournament. But in spite of the fact that physics is far from our best friend, we have enough knowledge of the subject to say that it is physically impossible for every parliamentary debate to be the biggest and most prestigious. Yet apparently that is what is proclaimed by every parliamentary debate.

So, striving to be different, we won't say our debate is the best because deciding the best is tough and confusing. But we can surely say that it has a world-class adjudication core, an extremely competent panel of judges and hopes to have widespread participation from across South Asia. If you're up to it, you can decide if it's the best or not after attending.

Plus, we have green pieces of paper with a bespectacled man on it and they are seductively fluttering and wafting their irresistible scent towards you.

Q: How do I register?
A: Wow,that was quick. Log on to www.bits-qed.org

Q: Why do I get the message "Website Not Found" when I click on the link given above?
A: If it's before 12 AM on 16th December 2010, the answer is: The site is not operational yet.
If it's after 12 AM on 16th December 2010, the answer is: We really do not know. Call or email us and we'll look into it.

Q: Any other rules or specifications I should be aware of?
A: The standard 3 on 3 Asians format
Team Cap : 2 teams per college (for now)
Total Team Cap : 80 teams
The "n" rule, ie a minimum of 1 adjudicator per team

Q: You claimed to have a world-class adjudication core, so who will be the Chief Adjudicator for the tournament?
A: The Chief Adjudicator for the tournament will be Mr. Derek Lande. He was CA WUDC 2009, DCA WUDC 2007 and DCA EUDC 2006. He was also the 3rd Best Speaker WUDC 2006 and Best Speaker EUDC 2005 among a very long list of other impressive things.

Q: I'm sorry but all these questions are perfunctory. Could you tell me a bit more about those nice, green, pieces of paper?

Teams
Winners: INR 69,169 (USD 1533.54)
Runners Up: INR 30,276 (USD 671.25)
Semi Finalists: INR 15,129 (USD 335.42)
Quarter Finalists: INR 6,084 (USD 134.89)
Octo Finalists: INR 3,025 (USD 67.07)

Adjudicators
Rank 1 to 3: INR 12,321 (USD 273.17)
Rank 4 to 6: INR 4,096 (USD 90.81)
Rank 7 to 10: INR 2,025 (USD 44.90)

Total: INR 2, 35, 565 (USD 5222.69)

The FAQ section is best concluded before the questions get any more colorful. If you have any extraneous queries, feel more than free to contact any of the glitterati mentioned below, email us or log on to  www.bits-qed.org after 12 AM on 16th December, 2010.

Hoping you attend and all that jazz.

BITS Debating Society,
BITS Pilani

The 9th NLS Debate

The National Law School Debate (NLS-D), now on its 9th year, is India's biggest, most prestigious and wildest parliamentary debating tournament. With over 60 teams and participation from across South Asia, a world-class Adjudication Core, and the strongest pool of in-house judges in South Asia, NLS-D raises the bar every year.

The Literary and Debating Society of the National Law School, Bangalore, is pleased to open registratio...n for the 9th National Law School Debate, 2010 to be held from the 6th to the 10th of November, 2010. The NLS Debate has successfully established itself as India (and the subcontinent's) biggest and most competitive debating tournament, which has raised the standard of debate in South Asia in the Asian Parliamentary Debate format. Through the introduction of international adjudication core members and teams, the NLS Debate has always been the trendsetter in the South Asian debate circuit.

This year, we're hoping to continue that tradition and alongside our usual legendary break night and stellar adjudication core, we are also trying to lighten the load on your pocket - with a flat rate of registration for domestic and international participants, as well as deals worked out with our partner airline Jet Airways, we hope to make this easy to access for South East Asia, and provide a platform for a pan Asian debate.

Here's the information you will need –
Registration for participants has two components - the basic cost of INR 600 / USD 12 that covers the rounds of debating, meals as well as the socials; this sum, following the registration, will be expected to be completed through a wire transfer. The remaining sum can be paid upon arrival in Bangalore.

The remaining registration amount of INR 1000 / USD 20 shall cover accommodation in Bangalore for the duration of the tournament, and 'crash' accommodation can also be availed of, which would entail sharing of a hostel room at a reduced cost.

The details regarding the registration payment as well as the accommodation shall be part of, amongst other things, the tournament package that will be sent to every successfully registering institution.

Further, anyone wishing to avail subsidized fares is urged to mail us immediately at lnd.nlsiu@gmail.com, so the information can be forwarded to our Airlines partner.

So, why should you come to the NLS Debate?

1) It's BIG - With a team cap of 80, and an institution cap of 3 teams, this is South Asia's biggest debate, showcasing the depth and breadth of debating in this part of the subcontinent. The returns are proportionally huge, with prize money totaling to INR 150,000 / USD 3300.

2) Our adjudication - We have South Asia's most experienced Adjudication pool, which has members that have broken at UADC, AUDC, All-Asians, WUPID and Worlds - all under one roof, and all of them will be around to judge 7 preliminary and 4 break rounds of Octos, Quarters, Semis and Finals.

Adjudication Core
Logandran Balavijendran - Asian Champion and a Worlds Chief Adjudicator not once, but TWICE. He's going to be the CA of WUDC in Botswana this year, and we're tickled to have him come down for NLS D. Oh, and if you're looking for more about him, he has also been an Australs CA, been a DCA for UADC and AUDC, has been an Australs finalist, a DCA at the Asians BP, a Worlds Octofinalist and a Worlds top 20 speaker.

Suthen Tate Thomas - he has been an Asian Champion, a Worlds DCA, an Australs finalist, a Worlds Octofinalist, a DCA for the Australs, and has been one of the shining examples of Asian debating at its best across the many years that he has been an active force in the Asian and Australasian Debate Circuit. Is also one of the best drinkers of beer, and starter of many infamous 'boat races' involving beer.

We've also invited Ahyoung Kim and Satya Venugopal to come down as our guests for this tournament. Both are slated to be DCAs for UADC 2011 next year. Satya was the best speaker at UADC this year as well as a finalist, while Ahyoung is the CA for Australs next year, and has been a Worlds Quarterfinalist judge. Joining them, we’re going to have various NLS Alumni who’ve taken the tournament to where it now is.

3) It's FUN - With a legendary break night party with flowing alcohol that is the social event of the debate calendar in addition to an opening night dinner, and a closing Championship party along with all sorts of crazy happenings (such as quizzes, a masters tournament, etc.) Also, the NLS Debate is starting right after Diwali, and international teams would be advised to drop down a day early to chill out and watch India's grandest festival, the festival of lights and joy (and delicious food and sweets).

4) Our experience - We have been doing this for the last 8 years, and each year our level of hospitality has ensured that each team gets picked up and dropped, gets accommodation and meals for the entire duration of the tournament. We shall leave no stone unturned to ensure that your time at the NLS D is absolutely enjoyable.

5) For novices – Knowing that not everyone has debated before, we know that some of you might question the wisdom of coming to NLS D if you've never done this before. We recognise that this isn't just about the fun and the competition - it is about developing debating and the kind of skills that go with it. Mindful of that, we have a separate novice break for all those who haven't done this before (or have only done it once before), and there will be a separate break for novice teams with Quarter, Semi and Final rounds.
