Call for Host of 2012 IDEA China Open Debate Tournament

IDEA would like to remind everyone about the open call to host the 3rd annual IDEA China Open Debate Tournament in 2012. Previously Xi'an Jiaotong University (2010) and Northeast University of Qinghuandao (2011) graciously served as hosts for the tournament. As the tournament has grown in size and popularity, IDEA has been approached by various schools wishing to host the tournament going forward. In order to choose among these offers fairly, we feel that it is important to have an open bidding process.

We therefore request that any school interested in hosting the 2012 IDEA China Open Debate Tournament submit the following information to this year's tournament director, Robert Trapp (trapp@willamette.edu ) and the executive director of IDEA-US, Alex Dukalskis (adukalskis@idebate.org ):

1. A letter of application from the applicant detailing the reasons for wishing to host the tournament, the facilities available for the tournament, and tentative budget.

2. The name, background and qualifications of the person who will serve as Tournament Host.

3. A letter of support from the university from a person at least as high-ranking as a dean.

Please submit by email to Robert and Alex. We are extending the deadline to September 15, 2011. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Scholarships available for the China Advocacy Institute

Get the tools you need to advocate for sustainability during the China Advocacy Institute.

The Advocacy Institute is an inter-disciplinary course set in Dalian, China that enrolls university students from China, the US, and other countries around the world. The institute's goal is to equip students with a deeper understanding of sustainability and provide the tools necessary for advocacy. This diverse course includes lecture, discussion, debate, media, and field trips to relevant sites.

This year, students will explore sustainability through two case studies of environmental disaster: the 2010 oil spills in Dalian, China and the Gulf of Mexico. Through lectures and discussion, instructors will guide students in analyzing how an oil spill impacts the environment and local livelihoods. The course will examine government and corporate responses to each of the two oil spills. As an interactive extension of course materials, Professor Robert Trapp will teach students to debate the issues formally. A professor of Graphic Arts from Dalian Nationalities University will exhibit his photographs of the Dalian oil spill and guide students on a tour of the site.

Last week for travel subsidies to judge in China!

Frist, thanks to all who have already submitted applications for adjudicator positions at the FLTRP Cup. We will make our first-round assessments for travel subsidies for adjudicators interested in attending the FLTRP Cup on March 10. If you have not submitted your application by this date you will likely miss out on available travel subsidy funds. Please visit http://www.chinadebate.org/Adjudicator.asp to apply.

The Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), organizer of the most prestigious English language debating tournament in China, invites you participate as a guest adjudicator at the 15th FLTRP Cup National English Debating Championship. The FLTRP Cup will be held May 7-14, 2011 at the FLTRP’s Convention Center in Beijing.

To apply to be an adjudicator, please visit: http://www.chinadebate.org/Adjudicator.asp

Last year, the FLTRP Cup made a successful transition to the British Parliamentary format, the style of debating employed by the World Universities Debating Championships. This transition was critical to connecting Chinese universities to the world of international debating and required the cooperation of volunteers willing to contribute their experience as adjudicators to the effort. We had an outstanding group of adjudicators attend, including Jess Prince (Canada), Sam Greenland (Australia), Josh Martin (USA), Stephen Boyle (Ireland), Lars Duursma (the Netherlands), Uri Merhav (Israel), Loke Wing Fatt (Singapore), Filip Dobranic (Slovenia), Jason Rogers (Canada), Justice Motlhabani (Botswana) and Monica Ferris (Canada) just to name a few. To continue the progress made last year, we are even more committed to bringing qualified adjudicators to this year's tournament.

Though the competition is open only to Chinese university students, there is a great need for skilled adjudicators to ensure that the standards of the BP style are upheld. To encourage you to participate in this effort, the FLTRP is sponsoring an incentive package for all qualified adjudicators with significant BP experience who agree to adjudicate at the 15th FLTRP Cup. All qualified adjudicators will receive:

· Scheduled transfers from Beijing airport to the FLTRP Convention Center (May 7)
· Hotel at the FLTRP Convention Center (May 7-14)
· All meals while at the Convention Center (May 7-14)
· Transfer to downtown Beijing (May 14)
· Hotel in downtown Beijing (May 14-17)
· Tours of major sites like the Great Wall & Forbidden City (May 15-16)
· Some meals while in downtown Beijing (May 15-16)
· Transfers to airport on May 17

Additionally, we will offer partial air travel subsidies to select qualified adjudicators.

The FLTRP Cup is the oldest, largest and most celebrated intercollegiate debating competition in China. Since it’s inception, the FLTRP Cup has been a major sponsor of intercollegiate debating in China and is on the forefront of promoting open discourse and intellectual exchange among the best and brightest of Chinese college students.

14th China National English Debating Championship 2010‏

128 teams, each from one Chinese university, took part in this year's 14th China National English Debating Championship 2010.  Held from 15th to 22nd May 2010 in Beijing, China,  the British Parliamentary (BP) Style was used for the first time, after 5 years  in which this Championship was competed in the American Parliamentary (NPDA) Style since 2005.

In the Grand Final, Ms Catherine Song and Mr Luka Noe (in the picture, with flowers in hand) from Tianjin Foreign Studies University defeated 3 other teams from the China Foreign Affairs University, the North-East University at Qin Huang Dao and the Beijing Foreign Studies University.

With this significant shift to the WUDC debate format, we can expect more Chinese debate teams competing globally.  This alignment of debate format with the rest of the world is also an important step for Chinese students to has an easier access to a larger competitive platform on which they could have many fruitful exchange of ideas with students from around the world.
