Special EUDC Council session at Koc Worlds‏

From EUDC mailing list:

Dear EUDC Country representatives, dear debate community,

hereby, I call a meeting of the EUDC Council to take place in Antalya at Koc Worlds on December 28th, over lunch. The exact time and place are still to be determined and will be posted on site in Antalya.

After a lot of discussion, I feel there is a need for discussing some rather urgent issues.

Please make sure that your country is represented at the meeting. I would like to apologize to all countries that for any reason will not be able to send representatives, but remind everyone of their right to send proxies acting for them. Please inform me beforehand if you plan to send a proxy on your behalf, preferably via e-mail or through facebook.

I expect this meeting to last considerably less than an hour. The urgency mainly stems from the proposed reg system for Amsterdam EUDC, and the elections of a new Worlds executive. Also, we would briefly like to update everyone on the work that has been done on decisions taken in Newcastle, so we will be able to follow through on these questions in Amsterdam.

This is the provisional agenda:
1. Report and vote: Registration System for Amsterdam EUDC 2010 (0:20 h)
A seperate e-mail containing detailed information will be posted immediately after this message.

Please find more information on this discussion at
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=logo#/topic.php?uid=53323524697&topic=11488,

2. Report on the finalized ESL/EFL proposal (0:05 h)
3. Report and discussion on the elections of the new WUDC executive (0:10 h)
4. Provisional report and discussion on eligibility (0:10 h)
5. Provisional report on the reform of regions (0:10 h)

Duration of the meeting: 0:55 h, shorter if possible

This Agenda is available at
http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AV03U5W2nMq6ZGY5am10N18yNnY1a2N4bmNu&hl=en_GB

This Agenda will be updated where necessary on Google Docs.

This message will be sent to the following groups:

EUDC@yahoogroups.com

British Debate britishdebate@topica.com

The Facebook Group EUDC Council

Please forward this message to anyone who might be concerned with the issues.

I hope to see you in Turkey!

Kind regards,

A new website and facebook groupp for EUDC Council‏

Dear debaters in Europe,

admittedly, EUDC Council may not be the most exciting topic to most of you. I would still like to draw your attention to the fact that following the Championships at Newcastle, there are now three new sources of information for those interested in Council activity or the Championships as such:

1. A new website at http://eudc.wikidot.com: Obviously, this project has just started, but it aims at providing comprehensive information about the Council and previous Championships at a central location. We have already put together tabs, motions etc. of previous championships, but a lot of information is still missing (see point 3).

2. A facebook group named "EUDC Council" at http://www.tinyurl.com/eudcfacebook: This is the place where ideally the debate would take place. Specifically country representatives are invited to join. For now, the list requires application, but we won't turn down anyone. The debate there has already started, and there are quite a few issues to be discussed, such as eligibility, ESL and sponsorship. An overview can also be found at http://eudc.wikidot.com/reform

3. A Google doc to gather information on previous Championships at http://www.tinyurl.com/eudclist. This document is open to editing, and we would be very grateful if you could help us to fill the gaps. Information entered here will be eventually used on the website.

Amongst the things that we are missing are:
- The team tab from Ljubljana / Portoroz Euros 2001
- The speaker tab from Aberdeen Euros 2000
- The Motions for Aberdeen Euros 2000 and Rotterdam Euros 1999
- Information on breaking judges from almost all Championships
- Links to websites from National Debating Societies

If anyone out there has that information or any other documents of interest slumbering on their computers such as old Council records etc., please email them to jhbfischer [at] gmail [dot] com.

Finally, please forward this email to anyone who might be interested. There are a lot of countries we don't know the representatives of (or if debating is taking place there), and it would be fantastic if this would be a way to get in contact.

All the best, I hope we will have a productive year!

EUDC Council 2009‏

Dear debating community,
EUDC is approaching with speed and so is the EUDC Council meeting.

I would like to ask any institution, country or individual who believes that there is something of importance that needs to be discussed and decided upon in Newcastle to send me an e-mail (posta.za.spelo@gmail.com) or contact me on Facebook (Spela Kunej) and inform me about issues they want to see discussed. This way materials can be prepared before traveling to Newcastle and delegates can find more info on which to base their decisions.

Up until now these are some of the issues that need to be discussed (or have been discussed before and should be decided upon) -
1. is there a need to split the Central & Eastern Europe region
2. the eligibility of individuals - specifying rules, should there be something like a 6 months grace period, should graduates be allowed to compete till the end of the academic year in which they graduated etc.
3. information regarding the EUDC council online, aka the web-site issue

Suggestions are welcome. You can find current rules in the EUDC constitution and in the Council decisions - links are attached.

Best,
Spela Kunej
Council President

Branka Marusic elected as new Euros Council President

Branka Marusic, Zagreb, Croatia, was elected by this year's Council in Istanbul as the its President.

Dear debating community,

This is the first (of many) e-mails by your newly elected president.

But to start off I would like to introduce myself. My name is Branka Marusic and for the past 3 years I have coordinated debate in Croatia and for the last year and a half I have been the EUDC Council VP for Central and Eastern Europe. In that period of time I had been dealing with various issues which gave me an insight into the specific situations and difficulties faced by countries when developing their debate programs (such as funding, institution recognition etc.) and answered and helped resolve questions, doubts and qualms. That experience served as an incentive to run for the EUDC Council president. Although it is most certainly challenging to live up to the standards set up by my dear predecessor Mr Lars Duursma, I am most willing - and by the trust you have expressed by electing me to this position also recognized as capable - to take up this task head-on.

In the coming year my wish is to improve cooperation between societies, instıtutions, countries and regions in Europe, as well as to represent the interests of all European regions such as working on setting up the criteria for clearer definitions of eligible institutions and speaker statuses (ENL, ESL, EFL).

And as the last point of this brief introduction, but certainly not the least important one, great many thanks to the organizing committtee of the Koc University and a fantastic Euros, and congrats to Tallinn as the venue of our next meeting.

Till soon,
With love from the gorgeous Istanbul,

Branka Marusic
