Zimbabwe PAUDC 2011: DCA applications now open!

Applications are now open for the three Deputy Chief Adjudicator posts at this year’s Pan-African Universities Debating Championship (PAUDC). The tournament will take place in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from 4th – 11th December 2011. The PAUDC 2011 organizing committee will work in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Debating Network and Contemporary Affairs Foundation in hosting the Tournament.

PAUDC is the largest debating tournament in Africa, attracting participants from several countries across the continent. It functions both as a regional tournament and a development project aimed at promoting all levels of university debating in Africa. DCA applicants should therefore keep in mind that, in addition to the usual organisational and judging duties of an adjudication team, they will be expected to be part of developing and running a comprehensive training programme.

We are looking for 3 DCAs for PAUDC 2011. In keeping with the regional nature of the tournament we are committed to regional diversity in our selection. We are also committed to expanding PAUDC as a tournament of international standards and quality. Non-African applicants are therefore welcome. There is also a strong possibility of travel grants for DCAs.

The following commitments and criteria will guide the selection of our DCAs:

A commitment to quality adjudication at PAUDC, with a focus on developing debating in Africa.

A commitment to introducing and maintaining international judging standards in regional debating (WUDC experience would be an advantage).

A solid background in BP debating and/or speaking (WUDC experience would be an advantage).

Organisational experience is a must, but it need not be related to debating.

Applicants should plan to be in Zimbabwe up to a week before the tournament (i.e. from the 27th November 2011). In the months leading up to PAUDC, each DCA will work on a specific aspect of the training programme. It is therefore a requirement that applicants will be easily contactable and ready to work on planning the training programme in this period.

The application process:
Application Phase: 10th May - 15th June
Each application should send a debating CV and a completed DCA application form to the Chief Adjudicator via e-mail (cweley@gmail.com). Applicants will receive e-mail notification upon receipt of their completed application.

Review Phase: 16th June - 29th June
Applications will be reviewed by the CA. If necessary, applicants may be contacted to provide additional information. If candidates are particularly closely matched, the CA may ask for feedback from the wider debating community on two or more applicants (to aid the decision making process).

Announcement: 30th June
Successful applicants will be notified and their names announced on the tournament facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=201169549917040&ref=ts) as well as other online debating forums.

Please feel free to contact me (cweley@gmail.com) with any questions about your application.

Kind regards

Clive Eley

Zimbabwe High Schools Debate Festival 2009

The Zimbabwe Youth Development Trust is organising a debate festival for high school students. It’s to be held during Intwasa Arts Festival in Bulawayo, in September. Zimbabwe has a recent history of being keen to debate but struggling financially. Innocence Ncube, named as an ‘emerging leader’ by the British Council in 2005, is working with Kate Wilson of One World Education regarding the festival. They are hoping to raise the money for transport, food, teaching, staffing and other requirements.

Why Zimbabwe?

  • There are more orphaned children in Zimbabwe than any other country in the world. As the older generation dies out, young people need to lead
  • Until this month there has been no aid for Zimbabwe since 2000
  • In the recent past freedom of speech hasn’t been an option for Zimbabweans
Why Debating?
  • A formal debate
  • Requires no expensive resources
  • Motivates students to research issues
  • Teaches teamwork
  • Encourages confidence and leadership skills
  • Improves listening skills
  • Can help students to win scholarships to universities.
How can I help?
There will be a few opportunities to get involved. The first two are
1) Innocent and some of his youngsters will be sending out a blog-style email covering life and learning in Zimbabwe. They asking for £2 (or a donation) from those who would like to receive the email. This can be given to directly to Kate if you meet her at a debating event around London or deposited into the bank account (info@oneworldeducation.co.uk for details). The first email will be out in mid June. Please email if you’d like to be on the list.
2) There will be a leisurely sponsored walk in north London on Sunday July 5th. Again please email if you would like to take part. Details will follow!

First Zimbabwe Debating Championship

Amid grief and tension at the untimely death of Susan Tsvangirai, the wife of the Zimbabwe prime minister, Zimbabwe hosted its first Universities and College Debating Championship from the 9th to the 12th March 2009 in the country’s second city of Bulawayo. The tournament drew participants from the university of Botswana and from 10 Zimbabwe teacher training colleges and universities.

The participating institutions were, the National University of Science and technology, University of Zimbabwe, Africa University, Great Zimbabwe University, Midlands State University, Chinhoyi University of technology, Bindura University of Science Education, Lupane State University, The Zimbabwe Open university, Hillside teachers College, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic and the Bulawayo Polytechnic.

The tournament comprised 16 debate teams and about 50 debaters and adjudicators from across Zimbabwe and Botswana. There were 5 preliminary rounds of debate before the semi-finals and then finals. The tournament run in the British parliamentary format of debating. This tournament comes as a result of growing interest in debating in Africa after the hosting of the first continental championships (PAUDC) this past December in Botswana. Members of the Zimbabwe contingent that was at the Pan-African Debating Championships in December organized the tournament with the support of the Zimbabwean National Youth Development Trust (NYDT) in Bulawayo. Participants from the University of Botswana were invited to help train and adjudicate at the tournament. Motions at this tournament ranged from the Zimbabwean National youth service, genetically modified foods to uplifting sanctions on Zimbabwe.

The University of Zimbabwe from Harare emerged as the winners of this tournament in a final held at the National University of Science and technology. The University of Botswana team comprised of Bruce Ngakile and Anthony Phaladi placed as runners-up. Anthony Phaladi was voted best speaker of the tournament. Trainers at the tournament from Botswana included Justice Motlhabani, Graham Sowa and Tebogo Taylor Mogotsi as an adjudicator.

Other regional debating tournaments are emerging in areas such as West Africa where in October this year Nigeria plans to host the first ever west African championship involving 16 countries in west Africa, these countries includes Mali, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Niger among many others. Previously only Zambia, Namibia, South Africa and Botswana have been the only African participants at worlds with South Africa dominating continental Africa debating. The Zimbabwe National Debate Tournament has continued to build hope for increased participation from more African countries in the subsequent world Championships
