Qatar Debate Academy

QatarDebate, a member of the Qatar Foundation, will be hosting the Qatar  Debate Academy in Doha, Qatar from October 29-November 6 2009. The program is organized in cooperation with Za in Proti Slovenia and the World Debate Institute of the University of Vermont. The program will focus on the development of debate in new countries, creating a meaningful international exchange and paving the way towards the World Schools Debating Championship in Qatar in February 2010.

"Southwest Asia is a prime candidate for the expansion of debating,"  said Alfred Snider of the World Debate Institute, "and Qatar is the ideal site and host for such an event. Their determination to promote debating and open civil discourse in this region is impressive and groundbreaking. I am inspired by Dr. Hayat Maarafi's vision of expanded debating in this part of the world. I hope that we can really spark some important debate development in these countries as well as expose them to more established debating trainers, nations and teams. We are expecting over 240 people at this event."

Team Qatar on BBC4

From: Britishdebate

If you are looking for some entertainment/amusement in a couple of weeks time and couldn't make it to the London or New York premieres, "Team Qatar", a documentary film which takes a look at some of the work that Alex Just and I have been doing out in the Middle East over the past 18 months, focusing on the Qatar National team, will be showing on BBC 4 at 10pm on Monday 11th May.

The film (directed by Tribeca returning director Liz Mermin) follows the first Qatari national debating team, one of the elements ofQatarDebate, a national debate and civic engagement organization for Qatar which Alex and I set up in September 2007, through their training in Doha, London and New York, to the World Schools' Debating Championships in Washington DC.

Amongst other things, the film offers a perspective on debating in the Arab World, an insight into the event that is WSDC and coaching a new WSDC team, and an unusual look at the perspectives and views of youth in the MENA region.

The film premiered at the Tribeca festival in New York on Saturday and Robert De Niro & Sheikha Mayassa Al Thani were both at our launch event. If star-power/name-dropping still hasn't convinced you, you can find more details below:

Launch of QatarDebate

Dear all,

We are delighted to formally announce the creation of QatarDebate (http://www.qatardebate.org/), the national student debating organisation for Qatar. QatarDebate was established in September 2007 with the aim of developing, supporting and raising the standard of open discussion and debate among students in Qatar and across the Arab World, shaping the Global Citizens of today and the intellectual leaders of tomorrow.

In the 4 months since its inception, QatarDebate has already worked with over 1000 students (from every nation in the Middle East) in Qatar to develop their debating and critical thinking skills through a series of regular workshops and to build social networks between schools and universities in Qatar and institutions around the world. Over the next 12 months, the Program will publish 4 debating training DVDs of workshops, show debates and expert seminars in both English and Arabic, organize a nationwide debate league and national competitions and send teams to both the World Schools’ and World Universities Debating Championships. Overall, we hope to create a world-class Program which will drive resurgence in debate, critical thinking and discussion of public policy issues in the Arab World.

The QatarDebate website http://www.qatardebate.org/ has just launched and includes information about debating in Qatar, QatarDebate coaching resources and links to the international debating community. Over the next month, a forum, blog and media streaming system will be added to the site, hopefully creating a debate and discussion hub open to students across the Middle East.

QatarDebate is a member of Qatar Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Qatar and Chaired by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, the consort to the Emir of Qatar, which aims to develop the potential of Qatar’s people through progressive education. The program is also supported by the Arab Democracy Foundation and enjoys a close relationship with the Doha Debates (http://www.thedohadebates.com/), Qatar’s unique forum for free speech in the Arab World.

We hope that you will have a look at the website and be involved in the QatarDebate program in some way over the next 12 months.

Best wishes,
Andrew Goodman & Alex Just
