Amsterdam Open motions analysis

Dear all,
After a while of radio silence, we are proud to present the statistical analysis of the Amsterdam Open (AO) 2009. This is an initiative from last year's AO CA-team and we are happy to continue it as we believe it increases transparency of judging results and hopefully helps fighting the good fight against the infamous motion-bias.

We are happy to inform you that there was no significant bias in this year's Amsterdam Open as a whole, although some motions showed an inclination to bias. The full analysis can be found here in a google doc. We hope you'll enjoy reading it.

With kind regards,
The Amsterdam Open 2009 CA team

DAPDI 2008

Dear all,
I’d like to inform you about the 20th edition of the Dutch Anglo-Saxon Parliamentary Debating Institute (DAPDI) hosted at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

DAPDI has a nice tradition to build on: our yearly five day summer course featuring 3 days of top level debating workshops and a 2 day tournament (the serious bit), topped with amazing evening programmes including: BBQ, Baja Beach Club and more (the fun bit).

We will fly in tutors from the Oxford and Cambridge Unions in the UK. They give the workshops and judge the tournament. All debaters are placed in a group of 8-12 people with similar debating experience to ensure workshops of the right level. So whether you’ve already won a few IV’s, or never debated before: DAPDI has something for you to learn.

The tutors of this year’s DAPDI are among the finest debaters Oxford and Cambridge have to offer. Being finalists and even winners of the European Universities Debating Championships (EUDC) and World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC), there are none better able to teach you the art of debating.

From oxford:
Lewis Iwu (current world champion)
Steven Goodman (upcoming fresher)
Neil Dewar (worlds Quarterfinalist)

From Cambridge:
Jo Box (director of debating at Cambridge)
Daniel Warents (worlds Finalist, European Finalist)
Giles Robertson (European Champion 2007)

The DAPDI 2008 will be held from 25th – 29th august. For more information and registration send an e-mail to dapdi@hotmail.com

You can also join DAPDI on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10848834884 and visit our website: www.dapdi.nl

Amsterdam Open results

Hello dearest debaters,

The second edition of the Amsterdam Open has taken place. We had a lovely team winning: Can Okar and Aneurin Brewer, and an even lovelier best speaker, Jess Harvey-Smith (who also deftly captured the Best Speaker of the Final Prize awarded by the University of Maastricht).

Best ESL Team were Simone van Elk and Leela Koenig, best ESL speaker was Leela Koenig.

Congratulations to all!

As part of our attempt to become one of the leading tournaments of Europe, we also engage in detailed quality monitoring. That's why we have analyzed the results to look whether there were some major biases. As it turns out, there were two rounds which were pretty op-biased. The results, and the explanation, can be found here: http://amsterdamopen.asdvbonaparte.nl/downloads/analysis.pdf

Amsterdam Open

Dear Debaters!
The second Amsterdam Open will take place in less than two weeks on the 25th and 26th of April. It promises to be another great tournament, with close to sixty teams now registered. And you can be one of them, if you register before Saturday the 19th of April!

We haven't been able to organise a heat wave, like last year, but the weather will be better than it has been for weeks. We have been able to organise great motions, movies and a wonderful weekend in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. We offer an excellent opportunity to get a taste of the nightlife, with a pub, club, whiskey or gay tour on Friday, and to get a view of the city, with walking and cycling tours on Sunday the 27th.

So if you need a break from your studies, exams, work or anything else in yourlives, register at http://www.ao2008.nl/ and join us in Amsterdam!

Kind regards,
Anne Valkering

Greetings!

from 3 to 7 July, the Erasmus Debating Society will host DAPDI, at our University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It's a five day summer course featuring 3 days of top level debating workshops and a 2 day tournament topped with one of the most amazing evening programmes on the debating circuit (the good stuff). Now, you may wonder, why should I care?

• We fly in top tutors from the highly successful Oxford Union (UK). Although the list isn't finalised yet, we hope to welcome Gavin Illsley (European Champion '06, World Semi-finalist '05), Richard Goodman (World Semi-finalist '06, European Semi-finalist '06), and Will Jones (European Semi-finalist '05 and '06, Top of team and speaker tab Euros '06 on straight wins), and others.
• Our evening programme will include a visit to the Baja Beach Club, watching the world cup semi-finals in our own private room in the local Irish pub, a BBQ, good dinners, and much, much more. And YES, of course, you're more than welcome to come and explore the `cultural riches' of the Netherlands.
• We've arranged BEDS (!) instead of someone's floor for the nights during DAPDI. International participants will be provided with any additional crash needed.
• DAPDI costs only €80, with an additional charge of €30 for accommodation. This includes the workshops, all meals and parties.

So, what are you still waiting for? Check out our website: www.dapdi.nl, sign up, and join the fun! I hope to welcome you to Rotterdam this summer.

The Netherlands Report to 2002 Worlds Council

At the 2002 Worlds Council countries were invited to submit a report to the council to let other nations know about debating in their country.  It was not compulsory but a number of nations gave reports.

The Netherlands Report to 2002 Worlds Council

Debating societies in the Netherlands are found at Universiteiten (where you study for a Masters) and Hogescholen (where you study for a Bachelors). There are also non-student debating societies, usually associated with youth sections of political parties.

Masters institutions always have the word Universiteit in their name. Bachelors institutions are called HBO, HEAO or HTS (always with the "H" of Hogeschool at the beginning of the acronym).

Advanced degrees for can be a Masters (either fulltime or parttime at an Universiteit) or a PhD (also at an Universiteit). A law degree is a standard Masters. After you finish Universiteit, you have to pass the bar exam through the law firm where you work. These people are *not* students, they are considered lawyers. The bar exam is not connected to any university institution, it is connected to the Bar Society. I have never met a PhD student at any debating society in the Netherlands, but it might happen in future.

There is currently only one Universiteit (and no Hogescholen) with more than 1 debating society. The Universiteit is the one of Leiden, where the two largest fraternities (Minerva and Augustinus) have their own debating societies. Minerva normally debates abroad as "Leiden" and Augustinus hardly ever debates abroad.

At other universities, debating societies are not linked to fraternities or student unions. They are independent student societies. There are law faculties with their own moot court competitions, but that is considered entirely separate from debating. At present Amsterdam has one debating society, but there are two Universiteiten. So it is conceivable that eventually a second debating society will be founded.

Edwin Mulensteen
