Yayasan Orator Confirms The Takeover Of The World Universities Peace Invitational Debate

From http://thedebatingnews.com

More than 5 years of WUPID history will draw to a close later this month when the debating event is for the last time until at least 2016 will no longer be organized by H & G Strategic Communications Sdn Bhd.

Yayasan Orator confirmed last Monday that it has secured exclusive rights to WUPID from 2012, including the WUPID in Bahasa Melayu, in a four-year deal believed to be worth at USD$1m.

Debating has been an important portfolio of H & G’s speech communication business since 2006, with WUPID in particular bringing both the nation and the world’s top university debaters to Malaysia. First sponsored by CIMB in 2007, WUPID attracted a domestic audience of up to 500 and, according to The Debating News, an estimated global viewing figure of 10 thousand.

CIMB WUPID 2008 were among the many outstanding moments to have been organized by H & G, and though the sponsor has ceased it’s sponsorship to concentrate on squash, many in global debating will find it difficult to forget CIMB's connection with global debating.

The exact value of the deal with Yayasan Orator remains secret due to "commercial sensitivity", but a report in The Debating News mid last month reported that it would be worth around USD$1m for four years.
Announcing the deal, Shamsul Azhar Ismail, the managing director of H & G, which conducted the negotiations, said that Yayasan Orator had "shown a total commitment to debating and WUPID", adding that "the new deal will not only deliver increased benefits for Malaysian debating, but with debating at large. Yayasan Orator offers a compelling vision to innovate the way debating is organized.

"They have also committed to expand the event and to promote WUPID more widely. This is a great opportunity for global debating in the long term."

Saiful Amin Jalun, the lead advisor for WUPID, said that the contract is "a huge boost for debating", and that "the vision and nature of this new arrangement will help to make a step change in the way we organize debating events".

The WUPID 2011 contenders so far.

From http://thedebatingnews.com/wupid

WUPID is less than 2 months away. Selected universities within the waiting list will be bumped up by this Monday. In the meantime, we would like to officially welcome and express our gratitude to the universities within the top 30 that has registered and confirmed their participation at WUPID this year. For the ones that have yet to register, there is still time and space. The closing date is on November 28, 2011.
So here they are, the team within the Top 30 that has registered to WUPID 2011:
  • University of Sydney
  • Monash University
  • University of Oxford
  • Yale University
  • Duke University
  • Australian National University
  • Hong Kong University
  • National University of Singapore (Defending Champion)
  • Nanyang Technological University
  • Ateneo De Manila University
  • University of Queensland
  • International Islamic University, Malaysia
  • Universiti Putra Malaysia (Wild Card – Host University)
  • Victoria Wellington University
  • University of New South Wales
To add to the anticipation and excitement, WUPID will be issuing the matchups for Round 1 a week prior to the Championship. You’ll know who you’re going against one week before arriving Malaysia. Having said so, you’re still getting the motion 15 minutes prior to the debate, but you know the theme.

This year, we are holding true to that theme - Peace. We have appointed a Peace Ambassador for WUPID that will ensure that whatever you lot will be debating this time round will be relevant to real world conflicts and crisis. Our esteemed Peace Ambassador is also the Honorary Advisor to the Perdana Global Peace Foundation so start researching!

Looking forward to see you at WUPID – Debate Like You Give A Damn!

Where To Stop On The Way To DLSU Worlds: Top 5 Reasons To Stop By WUPID 2011

Dear Fellow Debaters,
Are you heading up to Manila for the DLSU Worlds this December? Ever since the invention of airplanes and the discovery of alien technology, you can get straight to Manila from any part of the world without the need to transit or stop. But you should. Because WUPID 2011 is simply too good to miss!

If you’re looking for a good last training stint to guarantee your invasion of the Worlds, don’t wait after WUPID 2011. Because there’s nothing else after WUPID 2011, and just before Worlds. Compete at WUPID, reach the finals, and that alone would warrant you a place at the Grand Finals of the World Cup of university debating – Worlds.

Due to the fact that we’re a mere 80 days away from WUPID, here is my list of the top 5 reasons to stop by WUPID 2011 (in no particular order):

Newton’s Law - If you flick with me, I’ll flick you too.

It’s insidious how these things happen: The CA of Worlds – Lucinda, will be one of the DCAs of WUPID 2011. She may be bringing in some ideas and influence into the discussion of how the motions at WUPID should be. Which is a good preview especially if you’re going to Worlds. But she could also be influenced herself, and effect the motions at Worlds in a particular latitude that may share similarities to the motions at WUPID.

Wickedness is when you do not accept and embrace what is vested to you for free.

Believe it: If you’re one of the universities ranked in the top 30, or a university outside of the Asia Pacific, your registration is zero. Accommodation at a 5-star hotel, meals and transport to the host university is for free. Just register and get yourself to the official hotel.

You’re out there to convince the adjudicators, not yourself.

It doesn’t really matter what your values and beliefs are regarding a motion or topic. It’s about what your critical audience (judges) perceive of the motion. And looking at the material fact that the Worlds is in Manila, it is most likely that you will be having quite a good number of Asian adjudicators in the pool. Get a glimpse of the values that they cherish or embrace, and see how does it influences their judgement. These values are not just restricted to what is being argued, but also the manner the argument is conveyed.

The cultural olympiad will make Malaysian children grow up wanting to be you.

One minute well-intentioned parents will take advantage of the cultural bounty to introduce their youngsters to the wonders of Benjamin Woolgar’s 7-minute spectacles or Fiona Prowse’s mesmerizing wit and the next thing you know, the kids will be clamoring to enroll themselves to Oxford or Monash where debating is lifestyle. Then they’ll hit voting age and start lobbying the government to increase funding for debating and before you know it, Malaysia will be a hotbed of creativity and critiques – like you.

The chance to meet two of the oldest debating zealot in the history of Worlds.

No joke: WUPID is bringing back debaters and judges from pre-historic Worlds. The first Chair of the Worlds Universities Debating Council (WUDC) will be here. To illustrate what we mean, this ancient relic has a son that’ll be debating at WUPID this year. We’ve also brought back to life the second Chair of WUDC. Talk about a rack of fine wine.

WUPID: Team Sponsorship (Airfare) For The Top 30 Invited Institutions.

From http://thedebatingnews.wordpress.com/

All of us wants to go to WUPID – that’s what I was told. But when you actually come from an institution that is entitled to a zero registration fee policy, your determination is kind of slowed down a bit as the challenge of acquiring sponsorship for your airfare seems rather distant.

After organizing WUPID for four times, I have genuinely realized that the actual predicament for institution to send teams to the championship all lies in the cost of airfare, especially for teams outside the Asia Pacific. The solution is simple. Turning WUPID into an event very much like the Formula 1. And as students simply don’t have the time and perhaps the knowledge to look for their own team sponsor, we’re here to help you out. However, we need you to help us to help you. Therefore, we would simply need three documents:

The profile of the debating union / club / society;

The profile of the debaters that will be representing the respected institution; and

A formal letter requesting for funding.

Do not however imagine that this is some kind of charity. Under normal circumstances, sponsored teams would have to bear the title of the corporate sponsor i.e. CIMB Monash throughout WUPID 2011, furnish themselves with merchandises bearing the title and/or logo of the company and behave in a manner that does not disgrace and bring harm to the company’s name or brand.

For this initiative to work however, our sponsorship seekers would definitely need time. There is a lot of effort involved and absolutely far from the notion of falling asleep in the bath tub and waking up somewhere else. We intend to work closely with the organizers of DLSU Manila Worlds as well as the organizers of the Singapore Debate Open 2011. So please send us the information before May 2011 at wupidmania@gmail.com or yunus@hngsc.com.

I don’t know. I cannot promises or guarantee that we would be able to secure the needed funding for the airfare. But I do know this. It gets easier every year.

WUPID 2010: Registration Opens!‏

On behalf of the WUPID secretariat, it is my pleasure to formally invite you to WUPID 2010, taking place from December 18 – 23, 2010 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Debating
All debates will be in standard British Parliamentary format. All resolutions will be tightly linked to the theme - peace, with our very capable CA ensuring a  wide variety of topics are debated. There will be a cap of 60 teams. There will be five preliminary rounds. 16 registered teams, will then break to  quarter-finals. Awards will be given to the champions, finalists and top 10 speakers.

Adjudication
The Chief Adjudicator of this year’s tournament is Iqbal Hafiedz. In addition to being the founder of the Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP), Hafiedz’s accomplishments include: All-Asians best speaker and Worlds ESL quarter-finalist. Our Deputy Chief Adjudicator will be Faisal Moideen, Mediha Mahmood, Dr. Kamalan Jeevaratnam, Ray D' Cruz and two more internationally renown adjudicators that will be announced very soon. (Please visit here for updates.)

In addition to Hafiedz and his deputies, Malaysia has access to an incredibly deep judging pool. Between the UPM (host university) debating club, UPM alumni and other debaters in Malaysia, we have multiple Regional and National debating champions, as well as numerous members who have broken as judges or adjudicators at worlds. We're confident of the quality of judging in every room.

The judging requirement will be n-1, rounded down. If a team is unable to fulfill their judging requirement then this can be waived at the discretion of  the organizers. We strongly encourage those teams who feel like they need a waiver to contact us, rather than sending an adjudicator who may be uncomfortable judging.

More Information
For a complete detail on the event, please visit wupidmania.wordpress.com. Hope to see lots of you there! And any questions, please send to wupid@hngsc.com .
