Results from PAUDC 2010

University of the Witwatersrand (Wits A) (Oyena Gwebityala and Lionel Isaacs) have won the 2010 Pan African University Debating Championships.  Wits C,  University of Fort Hare, East London B and University of the Free State A

Best Speaker: Oyena Gwebityala (University of the Witwatersrand) -- 80.1 average

Best adjudicator: Lusanda Mtshotshisa (University of Fort Hare, East London)

Best institution: University of Fort Hare, East London

The motions
1. THW tax churches which make a profit
2. THB governments should not fund art forms of foreign origin
3. THW establish an independent African electoral commission to run national elections on the continent
4. THW not allow fast food companies to give toys away with unhealthy meals
5. THBT prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is a better investment than anti-retroviral therapy

6. THW allow local communities control over the curriculum taught in their schools
7. THB Associated Press should deny Ugandan media access to their wire service if they continue to publish lists of alleged homosexuals.
Octo-finals motion: THB South Africa should secure the Marange diamond fields in Zimbabwe
Quarter-finals motion: THW apologise for Arab colonialism in Africa
Semi-finals: THB WikiLeaks does more harm to an open society than good
Final: THW give the exclusive right to trade coltan to any and all groups who, in exchange, cease to use child soldiers or commit atrocities.

  1. Quick motion clarification:

    Round 5: THBT prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is a better investment than anti-retroviral therapy (which is way less wordy with abbreviations - THBT PMTCT is a better investment than ART)

    Round 6: THW allow local communities control over the curriculum taught in their schools
