Paris Open 2012

Registration for the Paris debating tournament is now officially open! We thus invite and encourage you and your members to come and participate in the Paris Open debating tournament which will take place on the 6th and 7th of April at Telecom ParisTech and we are delighted to welcome Anat Shapira as our Chief Adjudicator: DCA WUDC 2011, DCA EUDC 2007, CA of various tournaments in Netherlands, Turkey, France and Israel. Best ESL speaker WUDC 2006, best ESL speaker EUDC 2005 and 2003. Winner/finalist/top speaker of various other tournamentsThe Paris debating tournament is an annual debate tournament organised by the Paris Debating Union, a group of Parisian university debating societies. The organising team gathers students from some of France's most prestigious universities: Paris Descartes, Sciences Po Paris, Université Panthéon-Assas, and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications to establish friendly yet competitive debating in France and to continue a true debating tradition throughout Europe and further afield.

This will be a closed motion tournament, where all debates are conducted in British Parliamentary Style (BPS) also known as World Style over a two day period.There will be five preliminary rounds with breaks to semi-finals (with separate English as Second Language semi inclusive) and finals. The team cap is restricted to 48 teams (with the N-1 rule applying for judges) and a registration fee of €70 per team (i.e. 35 € per person) is required.

While now officially an open (composite teams permitted) the organisers extend this definition to mean an open flow of wine throughout the tournament! We also welcome a certain infamous lemon-sugar-vodka drink to our socials!

The Paris IV has been highly praised in terms of quality and style, making it a tournament you do not want to miss. LSE win the Paris IV

The 2011 Paris IV took place this weekend. Congratulations to LSE (John Ashbourne and Png Zhiheng) for winning the main break and Berlin for winning the ESL title, Harish Natarajan for topping the speaker tab and Desisslava Kirova for topping the ESL speaker tab. The tab is attached. If anyone is curious, the motions were as follows:

Paris IV

The Paris IV will be held from the 1st to the 3rd of April.  
The preliminary rounds will be held on Friday and Saturday with the final on Saturday night. Sunday you will be free to explore Paris.

Over the weekend there will be amazing socials with lots of food and wine available.

Ben Wollgar is the Chief adjudicator and there will be 5 minute speeches in the preliminary rounds.

Registration is 45EUR/Debater plus 10EUR for 2 nights crash accomodation if required.

Paris IV 2010

The Ecole Centrale de Paris, Université Paris Descartes , Université Panthéon Assas and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (TELECOM ParisTech) are proud to host the Paris IV 2010!


Debaters and adjudicators from Europe and all over the world are invited to join us from the 28TH to the 30TH of May 2010 in “the city of lights” for a BPS open tournament of four preliminary rounds with 5’ speeches, semi-finals and a final (Main and ESL) with 7’ speeches.

This year, our top-notch adjudication panel will be headed by Chris Croke the current world champion as part of Sydney A, and will also include Leela Koening, Can Okar and other veteran adjudicators.

Loyola Marymont win Paris IV

The Loyola Marymount team of Kevin Kiley and JJ Rodriguez won the 2008 Paris IV. They won the final on a 4-1 split over the second Hybrid team of Ard WArd & Bob Nimmo (no news on the other 2 teams in the final)

The motion for the final was "TTHB western political leaders should boycott the olympics in Beijing".

I've had a query from a student going to spend some time studying in Marseilles. He wants to know if there are any debating societies in the area. I'm not aware of any but if anyone reading this can help please post a comment.
