Having noticed that my twitter account was getting a bit swamped I spent some time over the weekend putting together a "List" of debate related Twitter accounts. It is mainly debating societies and competitions but I'm hoping that I can use lists to better isolate the news segment I am interested in following (e.g. debating news from friends news from Irish news etc).
The list is public so if anyone is interested in seeing who is on it and following some or all of it go to https://twitter.com/#!/colmflynn/debate
If you want to add to the list e-mail me or put a comment below.
This Blog has now moved to idebate.org/worlddebating - all future posts will be made there!

Launching Debating Mate Worldwide
Debate Mate, a charity that works in the poorest parts of the UK teaching debating and this year we're all set to take this to the world. We send top university debaters into schools around the world to teach debating. Check out the promo video for more information:
We have secured funding for a number of places globally and want to continue to branch out the new places in Africa, America, The Middle East, and Asia and we therefore really need the support of the debating community to act as mentors around the world. We were recently in Israel and Palestine and we were overwhelmed with how supportive the Debaters of Israel were!
Debate Mate empowers young people and creates the leaders of tomorrow. We send top university debaters into areas of high child-poverty, to run after-school debating clubs, through which children improve their verbal intelligence and higher-order thinking skills.
Our core programme has been running in the UK for four years and reaches over 2,000 young people a week across four cities. Farther afield, we have successfully taught our programme to disadvantaged schoolchildren in Nepal, Palestine/Israel, and Boston.
This year we are expanding our international work in a big way, with a concerted launch of Debate Mate Worldwide. In addition to those countries already mentioned, we expect to be running summer schemes in India, the UAE, Kenya, Uganda, Jamaica, South Africa and Rwanda. We are looking for motivated 'world-changers' to help us reach even more young people and change even more lives. This is open to ALL debaters Worldwide.
Sign up at debatemate.com/worldwide. This is open to ALL debaters world wide. If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact seun@debatemate.com

Happy Christmas
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all visitors to this
site a happy Christmas. Of course if you celebrate a different festival
at this time or even if this time of year is of no special significance
for you I hope you will still accept my wish for happiness, peace and
prosperity at this time and into 2012.
And in particular I would like to wish best of luck to all those travelling to worlds in Manila. I'm sure it will be a great tournament and be sure to come back here for regular updates over the next few days.
Nollaig shona dhaoibh.
Colm And here is a little Christmas humour from Ireland to get you in the mood.

Updates delayed
I know a few people have e-mailed me updates to post to the site. I am in an area with very patchy wifi access at the moment. It may be a few days before I get to post them but rest assured they will be posted.

World Debate Forum Updates : 15 Presentations and Two Weeks Left to Register!
Greetings!
We are happy to announce that we have 15 confirmed presentations at this point. Presenters at WDF 2012 will share debate ideas from Germany, Malaysia, Estonia, China, Philippines, Mindanao, Iraq, Francophone Africa (with a focus on Cameroon), South East Asia, Burma, South Korea and the USA.
Presenters will be evaluating the success of at least 3 institutional debate programs, analyzing the impact of debate in 2 less-than-peaceful areas, 2 cases of debate & political progress, looking at debate & technology and much much more. There will also be open forums on the topic areas and space for you to contribute during the WDF. More information about the presentations are available on our website! http://worlddebateforum.org/node/18
Two weeks remain before registration closes and only 30 open spaces remain. For those of you who register after the 10th of November, we cannot guarantee the same registration fee, as the negotiated rate with the hotel and other costs may increase - so register now at www.worlddebateforum.org to get 3 nights hotel accommodation, 6 full meals and a ton of debate goodness for only 75USD a person!
Cheers

Haiti Appeal
As regular visitors to this blog will know I generally don't post about non-debating related issues. So when I do you can be fairly sure it's for an exceptional circumstance.
I'm sure most of you will be aware of the devastation in Haiti after the recent earthquake. Relief is trickling through but by all reports demand is far out stripping supply and the country is fast descending into anarchy around the survivors.
The chances are if you are reading this then you are in a better position than the inhabitants of Port-au-Prince. Given the multinational nature of visitors to this site I'm not going to recommend any one relief organisation but if there is one in your country currently appealing for donations to help their work in Haiti then I urge you to contribute what you can.
Thanks in advance,
Colm
