De La Salle Worlds Rego update

Dear World Debating Community,

After giving all teams on our wait list a chance to register for the championship, we are now entertaining requests for institutions to increase their contingent size.

We are making an open call for interested institutions to send in their intent to add more teams via registration@dlsuworlds.com. We will be giving priority to institutions which currently have one team registered and will be granting one additional team per institution at a time. Based on our bid, we are now moving into the 3rd Criteria of Promotion which gives premium to an institution's consistency of participation in previous WUDCs.

Please note that we will still follow the n-1 rule and regular rates for registration will still apply. Kindly include "(INSTITUTION NAME) REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL TEAMS" as the subject of your email and be sure to indicate which WUDC (host and year) your institution has participated in. Deadline for application will be on July 8, 2011.

Thank you very much!

Yours in St. La Salle,

Dino de Leon
Convenor, De La Salle Worlds

WODC 2011 update

One little update on the World Online Debating Championships.

Okay, so you've registered; but there's one little formality left(before the debates in August). Now, you have to either ask Dave for bursaries at dc@debatewise.org  (just ask, they only charge a fee to insure participation, if you can prove you are serious about participating you'll get a partial or full bursary) and/or send payments via Paypal or moneybookers to wodc@debatewise.org ($US20 per person 'or' $100 per team).

Only four more countries can join the loop to make it officially 32.

We had people from 34 countries in (wrote to Dave about wanting to participate) but a few of those countries have yet to settle financial matters. If you need a bursary please ask for it, or you might not be in the final pool. :S

Follow up info:

Greetings from Seoul :)

In relevance with the Survival Guide in Seoul previously posted, I as the finance manager would like to make one more announcement.

One of our main sponsors, the NH Bank, have promised to provide currency exchange services at the cheapest price in Korea. They will not be receiving any exchange fees, but will exchange your currencies into KRW in whatever price it is at the market at the time of your visit.

Therefore, it is advised to all participants, to buy the minimum amount of KRW at the airport, and exchange the rest at the bank branch office right beside our registration venue, the Lexington Hotel.

The Finance Team will be guiding you to the branch, provide translation services, and help you with the process so that you may take maximum advantage out of this great opportunity to enjoy Korea. It is vital that you have enough Korean Wons as most, if not all, Korean stores only accept Korean Wons.

Exchangable currencies are as follows:
USD
JPY
EUR
CNY
GBP
CHF
CAD
HKD
SEK
AUD
DKK
NOK
SAR
KWD
BHD
AED
SGD
MYR
NZD
THB
IDR
TWD
PHP
INR

The currencies not mentioned above can not be exchanged into KRW in NH banks, so if you come from a region that use a currency not mentioned above, it is advised that you exchange your currencies at the airport, or within your own region.

Only a few days to go!! Can't wait to meet all of you in Seoul :)

With Regards,

Aaron J. Yoo

Open Society debate program in New Orleans

The International Debate Education Association in association with the Open Society Foundations is looking for university debaters from around the world to take part in a debate program in New Orleans in early August. The project will be divided into two parts and entrants are welcome to apply for either the first or for both. All transport costs will be paid by IDEA and accommodation will be provided by Loyola University.

The first part, the Open Society Debates, runs from the third to the seventh of August. We are calling on college debaters world wide to audition to be in the pilot of a show about debate. Six speakers from different universities and countries will be randomly placed into two teams, and a video crew will document drama and tension as debaters from around the globe learn to work together to construct their arguments for a public final debate. We are hoping that the videos will be broadcasted around the world starting in the fall

The second stage, starting on the eighth of August, is a debate camp for local high school students who will be investigating the balance between liberty and security. Participants who choose to stay on for this part will receive a per diem allowance and, once again, all accommodation, meals and transport will be provided. The debate camp will run until the nineteenth of August.

The application deadline for both programs is July 12th, and the application can be found at: http://www.idebate.org/open-society-debates/

All debaters have to do is fill out some basic information about themselves, submit a short clip of themselves debating, and submit a statement explaining their interest, not to exceed 200 words.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks,
Cara Eckholm

Chair of World Schools Council appointed District Judge

The following e-mail has been sent out to the mailing lists by Claire Ryan to announce her resignation as chair of council of the World Schools Debating Championships and that she will not be attending the upcoming championships in Dundee.  However the good news is that she is stepping down to take up a position as a District Court Judge in New Zealand.

Congratulations to Claire.  She has contributed a huge amount to schools debating around the world and she will be missed.  I'm sure she will have a long and successful judicial career ahead of her.

Greetings everyone from an unusually sunny day in wintry Auckland - great for astronomy tonight!

I was planning on letting you know some other news today but with the exciting announcements emerging this morning about WSDC 2011 ( the draw!) and WSDC 2012 ( the newsletter!) which hopefully will take the limelight, I am grateful that my less interesting news can slip quietly in behind.

My news is that I have been appointed as a District Court Judge and will be sworn in on 5 August 2011. I am very fortunate to be able to carry out my judicial duties in Auckland and not have to work and live somewhere else although I may go on circuit to other places in New Zealand from time to time. I will be presiding over jury trials and working in the Youth Court which will be wonderful and I look forward to it.

I will need to leave WSDC and I have tendered my resignation to the Executive to be effective from 5 August 2011. In accordance with the rules, Beth James, as Vice Chairperson will step into the breach until the elections in Dundee when you will choose a new Chairperson. I ask you to give Beth every support in this time. As you know, she is doing a fabulous job as co-CA and her organisational and leadership skills are phenomenal. I am sorry that I am imposing such an extra burden on her prior to Dundee.

I also want to thank the other members of the Executive for their service to you and the debating community; Hayah Eichler, Mehvesh Mumtaz Ahmed, Sherria Ayuandini, Effie Giannakouri, Irene McGrath, Mert Onen and Joshua Park.

Sadly, I will not be able to attend Dundee. As a number of you know, I intended to stand down as chairperson at Dundee anyway but my appointment has moved matters forward more quickly. It means I can't say goodbye and thank you in person and I'm sorry about that. But as my little (6 ft 6) brother says, "it is what it is."

What I can say by email is that it has been an honour and a privilege to work with you for almost 10 years and to watch our school debaters grow into fine young men and women who contribute in positive ways to the community. I have made some wonderful friends from the WSDC community (you know who you are!) and know that those friendships will continue.

I end with two phrases in reo (Maori language).

First a whakatauki (or proverb) for our young people and their call to leadership;
Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi.
The old net is cast aside, while the new net goes fishing.

Second, from within me;
Ko kaiwhakawā tōku mahi; ko nga hoa tōku mauri
Judging is my job (but) friends are my life-force.

Kind regards and thank you for all you do and all you are.

We have added Charles Crawford, a former British ambassador, to the line-up, who will run a seminar on writing speeches in English for non-native speakers.

Buy your ticket here now: http://uksgconference2011.eventbrite.com/

If you are in need of accommodation there are three single bedrooms at The Whitehall available for the night of Thursday 15 September (& the Friday if required). The price is £46 per person per night for B&B. Tel Sara Uzzell 01202 554682.

Eve of Conference:
We are in negotiations with a branding agency to organise the first UK Business Speaker of the Year competition on Thursday 15 September in the Ocean Room Theatre, Bournemouth. This promises to be an X-Factor-style event, with Max Atkinson, author of Lend Me Your Ears, playing the chief judge role of Simon Cowell.

Those attending the conference the next day will get free entry to the contest.

Contestants will submit a one-minute showreel audition of their performance, which will be put on YouTube. The judges will be looking for ‘an inspirational business message for our times’. If you know of any aspiring professional speakers who would like to take part, please make them aware of the competition. The website will be launched next week.
