Out of a genuine interest, does a country that sends one team from one institution or two/three teams from one institution get as many votes in the process as England, Australia and the USA?
ReplyDeleteRCM
The 'founding countries' each get four votes. I believe they are Canada, U.S, England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand.
ReplyDeleteThere was a big split between how the English speaking nations voted and how the non-English speaking nations voted. Because the best teams and judges are English speaking there was an atmosphere of a backlash at council. It is now a crime to be a native English speaker at Worlds Council.
ReplyDeleteI was not at council but I don't know if that is correct. Afterall Sam Greenland was elected chair of the same council.
ReplyDeleteThey were two very good bids and unfortunately someone had to lose out. Hopefully Hart House will bid again next year.
To be completely fair, there was some controversy over the vote for Hart House even among some English-speaking nations.
ReplyDeleteAustralia, for example, was on the verge of reconsidering their vote. They probably would have changed their vote to Manila, in fact, if not for some procedural concerns.

ReplyDeleteMost English universities also voted De La Salle's way but Oxford and Cambridge did not so in the end England voted Hart House. Ireland also was on the verge of reconsidering their vote but for the procedural concern. Scotland and Wales voted for Manila. I am not sure your dichotomy of English and non-english countries is accurate. The Manila bid was just downright better in terms of balancing the interests of all regions and organizational preparation. That is the main reason why we voted for them and not on the spurious claim of a linguistical divide.
ReplyDeleteIn response to the above comment about the possibility of another HH bid, I'm sad to say that my understanding is that they don't want to bid for 2013; the same people won't be around.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that the English-speaking/non English dichotomy is probably more an illusion than reality. Countries are not monolithic in their opinions and vote for varying reasons, and I'm sure they're more pragmatic than a desire to stick it to the Anglos. I supported HH's bid primarily because of geography.
That said, it's not entirely fair to say that DSL was superior in terms of organizational preparation. HH's bid package and website were well organized and professional, and frankly had a decorum that DSL's bid site lacked. I believed the website described one of the exec as being "pissed off" and the equity officer described herself as qualified on the basis of being a former feminist.
I'm not saying that automatically makes DSL's bid inferior or Worlds bound for failure, but I don't think there was a huge discrepancy between the bids. HH's worst error in terms of planning might have been that horrible black-text-on-blue-background powerpoint slide.
i'm not sure the descriptions of org com members is a good barometer of decorum. after all, lots of org com descriptions are written in different styles and humour(some serious and some fictional). instead, decorum can perhaps be better approximated with actual behaviour during worlds. at pre-council for instance, the bid package from de la salle were distributed on time and the bid presentation was also timely and more professional. and the CA of Hart House made an unfortunate comment about Manila that made the crowd boo at him. So I am not sure decorum was one of the Hart House bid's strong points.
ReplyDeleteTo gudruncita, Bangkok is the Capital of thailand, just pointing it out coz both names appear on the voting list :)
ReplyDeleteDLSU has the right to host 2012 WUDC , and please don't be so racist about the Philippines. DLSU in Manila is one of the most prestigous Debating University in the Philippines. Philippines has its own right to host. The first reason is that Filipino People knows how to speak, write , communicate in English , and also English is a secondary langauage in the Phillippines. The 2nd reason is that this is the chance to show Southeast Asia has a chance to host. Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteGo Philippines =)
