Universiti Malaya won the third Asia-Pacific Mandarin Debate Competition after beating National University of Singapore at Shih Hsin University in Taiwan Saturday.
The teams debated the topic “Intellectual property protection will help the growth of society”.
UM student Ooi Choong Han, whose team supported the statement, was named the best speaker. Other team members were Yeow Boon Bin, Tey Xin Yi, Tuan Earn Yee, Sia Shang Yuen and Chow Yu Hui.
Sixteen universities from China, Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, Russia, Singapore and Malaysia participated in the competition.
MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting congratulated the team for their outstanding performance.
“I am proud of their performance in the competition. They beat teams from China and Taiwan before reaching the final,” he said in a statement.
