The Central Canadian Novice Championships was held this past weekend at Trinity College, University of Toronto. For the first time, this tournament for those new to university debating was held in British Parliamentary style in honour of the WUDC being held in Canada this year.
Hart House (John Ashbourne & Hana Dhanji) won the final over Queen's University (Christine Wadsworth & Sheldon McCormick), Hart House (Michael Beeler & Akash Toprani) and Queen's University (Michael Portner-Gartke & Andrew Tiffin). The top speaker was John Ashbourne.
Motions:
1. THW ban tobacco.
2. THW allow child labour in the developing world.
3. THW end arts funding.
4. THW would pull out of Iraq.
5. THW allow organs to be sold.
Semi: THW would reserve seats in the House of Commons for aboriginal peoples.
Final: THW extradite suspected terrorists to countries which practice torture.
