2nd East Asian Invitationals 2010 Results and Motions

The 2nd East Asian Invitationals 2010, organised by the Higher Education Service Centre (GAES) of the Macau Government was held from 11th to 15th Nov 2010 at the charming Pui Ching Middle School in Macau. This year, the top 16 invited Asian varsity debating teams represented 9 countries/territories were: ADMU (Philippines), UT Mara (Malaysia), TU/ICU (Japan). Chulalongkorn U (Thailand), TWEDS (Taiwan), NUS (Singapore), PKU & Tsinghua U (China), HKU (Hong Kong), and UMAC/IPM/MUST/USJ (Macau).

These 16 debate teams were judged by 7 top Asian adjudicators: 4 DCAs Sharmila Pramanand, TJ, Suthen "Tate" Thomas, Satya Venugopal, 2 Invited Adjdudicators: Dr Omar Salahuddin, Ms Ely Zosa and CA: Loke Wing Fatt. These 7 top judges were joined by 6 China/Hong Kong judges: Crystal Zhao, Nancy Xue, Carol Luk, Kevin Li, Jasmine Tam, and Amanda Ou.

In the Grand Final, Shiveena Pramanand and Cecile Danica Gotamco of the Ateneo De Manila University defeated National University of Singapore (Ashok Rai & Kelvin Chong), University of Macau (Nicole Ng & Omoleye Segun Emmanue) and University of Technology Mara, Malaysia (Mohd Shariq & Mohd Syafiq) to become Champions for the second time.

Mr Kelvin Chong was adjudged as the Best Speaker of the Grand Final, while Ms Shiveena Pramanand was voted as the Best Speaker of the Tournament.

On behalf of all the debaters, adjudicators, coaches, supporters, and friends of the Macau debating community, I would like to thank Dr Kuok Sio Lai, Ph.D., Acting Director, Higher Education Service Centre, for her unstinting support for this event. Thanks must also go to Ms Monie Kwok, Ms Stephanie Io and Ms Eva Kou for making the tournament such a great one for everyone involved. Everyone was impressed by the hospitality and professionalism of the support staff at the 4-Day tournament.

We look forward to the 3rd East Asian Invitationals 2011 in Nov 2011.

2nd East Asian Invitationals 2011 in the Macau SAR, China

The Macau North-East Asian Open 2010

The University of Macau (UMAC) successfully hosted this year's North-East Asian Debate Open 2010 (NEAO), from 29th October to 1st November, in the increasingly important emerging Asian debate-nation of China, in Macau. 100 teams from Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau competed in 5 BP Preliminary Debate Rounds. The debaters and adjudicators were treated to great hospitality from the students of the University of Macau, a Halloween Break Party, the famed Macau-made egg tarts, and a Championship Dinner of Portuguese food at a cutely named restaurant called "Dumbo". The weather was a very cool and refreshing 20 Celsius.


Besides the treats which the participants enjoyed, the debating activities were ably managed by the Organising Committee led by Ms Flora Pan. Chief Adjudicator, Ms Nicole Ng, seamlessly mustered the combined young adjudication talents of the 4 DCAs Ah Young Kim (Korea), Andrew Nishizaki (Japan), Sandeep Chulani (Hong Kong) and Zhengbo (China) to provide fair and competent adjudication for all the debaters. Logan from Chung Ang University, Korea, and Loke Wing Fatt from SAID, Singapore, were the two invited VIP judges.

In the Grand Final, Underwood College Team 1 of Yonsei University in Korea, comprising Ms Nurliana Kamaruddin & Mr Wonjoon Jang, were the unanimous Champions. They overcame 3 other top Korean debate teams in an all-Korean Grand Final, reminiscent of last year's edition. The motion in the Grand Final was: This House believes that drug addicts should only be eligible for social welfare under condition of rehabilitation.

Taiwan's Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in Kaohsiung will host next year's NEAO 2011.

University of Macau will be hosting the most prestigious Asian debate tournament called the 2nd United Asian Debating Championships 2011 next May 2011.

3. Our tiny and beautiful campus: you probably have never seen such a small but comprehensive university in your life. We offer:

a. Grand briefing/Roll call hall. The only bad thing is that you can't eat in it
b. All debate rooms are air-conditioned, though the weather should be pretty pleasant during the tournament time
c. Free access to WiFi across the campus. You have absolutely unrestricted access to Facebook and Google.
d. It is so tiny that everything is very close to each other, the library, the cafe, the canteen, the computer room, etc.

NEAO 2010 is also a warm-up to better prepare the Organizing Committee for 2nd UADC next year. We want to showcase Macau and our university. Because we are proud of them and we want to take good care of you!

1st East Asia Inter-Varsity Invitational English Debate Competition 2009

The 1st East Asia Inter-Varsity Invitational English Debate Competition 2009 was held from 10th to 13th Dec 2009 in Macau at the Institute of Tourism Studies. Organised by the Tertiary Education Services Centre (Gabinete de Apoio ao Ensino Superior) of the Macau Government, 16 invited teams from Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau competed in 5 preliminary rounds of debates conducted in the Worlds' style.


The Semi-Finalists were:

The Runners-Up were Team Multi-Media University, Team Toyko University and Team Hong Kong University. The Best Speaker in the Grand Final was Mr Sandeep Chulani from the Hong Kong University.

Grand Final: THBT reduced American military presence in Asia is good for Asia.
