London Australs - Reg Opens Tomorrow 10:00am GMT!

Dear All,
London Australs is an exciting new tournament being hosted in London on Saturday March 27th and Sunday March 28th. It will be held in the Austral-Asians debating style (i.e. 3 v 3) with the addition of points of information (similar to the World Schools’ debating format). The competition is completely open so you can debate with absolutely anyone you like.

Our A-Team is incredibly experienced in the format, and consists of Chris Croke (current Australs DCA for Auckland Australs), Tim Jeffrie (Current Australs DCA and Current Worlds DCA for Botswana), Fiona Prowse, Sayeqa Islam (former Australs DCA for Monash Australs) and Ben Jasper. Their debating record speaks for itself, with 1 current World Champion and 3 Worlds finalists, 2 current Australs winners and 3 Australs finalists, 4 Australs Top Ten Speakers and 2 Worlds Top Ten Speakers, all of who have in-depth adjudication experience.

The London Australs team is going out of their way to make this a memorable tournament with plenty of extra tidbits such as a Chocolate Trophy for the winners, cash prizes, Austral-Asian themed food and drink events and more!

Registration for teams opens tomorrow January 15th at 10:00a.m. GMT. We are expecting spots to fill up very quickly, so make sure you register as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. To register, visit http://www.londonaustrals.com/ and click on the "Teams - Register Now" link. Registration is set at the extremely low price of £20GBP per person.

If you would like to be involved in judging at the tournament, visit http://www.londonaustrals.com/ and click on the "Apply to Judge" link to see all the details relevant to judges.

We are very excited about bringing this format to Europe and hope to see lots of you competing. We think it’s important that people on this side of the world have access to different formats of debating and closer links to different regional circuits. If you have any questions or need more information about the competition, check out the website (where we have posted Australs rules/videos and have set up an online forum for any general questions) or email us at londonaustrals@gmail.com.

World Rankings for 2010

After the recent Koc World Debating Championships I have compiled the 2010 World Rankings of Debating institutions.

A few of things to note:

The rankings are by institution not college. (e.g. UCD L&H and UCD Law are separate)
They are calculated by adding up the total team points scored by an institution at worlds (e.g. if Limerick A score 15 and Limerick B score 14 the total for that institution is 29 for the year).  This score is totalled for each of the last 5 years.  The only exception is where an institution has hosted Worlds (e.g. Cork, Koc, UCD etc) within the last 5 years then their score from 6 years ago is added as they cannot compete in the year when they host.

The score of each team counts.  There have been complaints that the 8 teams Sydney sent to Vancouver pushes them up ahead of other teams.  But the reality is they did send 8 teams.  Worlds Council and the Org Comm allowed them send 8 teams.  The rankings reflect what did happen not what people wish had happened.

There are various arguments about how I should calculate these.  There have been requests to calculate these by average per team.  To just take the result from the top team per institution. To include other tournaments.  etc.  I have looked at these and in each case the arguments are valid.  However for me this method of ranking rewards every point a team gets.  Mathematics don't determine where the institution is ranked, the institution's speakers do.  I think ranking by the total goes some way to rewarding the overall organisation of a society over a number of years rather than just the skill of one or two individuals.

The rankings are unofficial and are just something I have published on this site for a number of years.
Please let me know if you spot any errors in the rankings.

Videos from Koc Worlds 2010‏

Greetings
First off, a hearty congratulations and a big thank you to Koc for running
what was one the best Worlds I have ever been to! Great organization, great
fun and great topics and adjudication. You guys have made our job at
Botswana next year much harder!

I'm sending this email to
a) share videos I took during the tournament. I have 13 videos, available for viewing at http://loganimal.blip.tv
b) contact the individuals in the videos. I lost the notebook I used to keep their contact information and I promised them I would send them copies of the videos. If anyone wants their videos please email me. If anyone also wants me to remove their videos from the website, please let me know and I'll do it immediately.

Cheers
