Cambridge IV update

From Britishdebate

Dear all,
This is a notice about this year's Cleary Gottlieb Cambridge IV. As some of you may know, we have filled our team cap of 100 teams and we are currently operating a waiting list. This is a message to any institutions who wanted to attend but were deterred from registering because we had filled our team cap and to anyone who hasn't paid yet.

The payment deadline for institutions already registered is 1200 BST, Monday October 13 2008. As such, we may unfortunately have to cut the places of teams that have neither paid nor contacted us about this by this time. (This, incidentally isn't because we're horrible people; it's because we want as many teams as possible to be able to come, rather than lots pulling out on the day, and because we have to pay our caterers and suppliers soon, and need to confirm our numbers.)

So: we think that teams currently on the waiting list stand a good chance of making it to the competition. If you are an institution, which is interested in joining them, please contact us through the Cambridge IV e-mail address: iv[AT]cus[DOT]org.

Best wishes,
Sam Block & Richard Lau
Convenors of the Cambridge IV 2008.

First Pan-African Universities Debating Championships

The Pan- African Universities Debating Championships (PAUDC) Organizing Committee, (formerly Botswana Worlds bid organizing committee) in conjunction with The University of Botswana and The Botswana Debating Council, is proud to organize the Inaugural Pan- African Universities Debating Championships to be held in Botswana, Gaborone in December 2008.

The tournament will
- be held in Worlds Style, at the University of Botswana campus in Gaborone
- be from the 8th to the 14th of December 2008
- cost P450 per person (less than 90 USD) - this is inclusive of accommodation, meals, events (Opening and Break night party, Championship dinner AND a visit to the Mokolodi nature reserve to experience Africa's Big 5!)
- include a training workshop and adjudication test
- feature a board meeting with representatives from all African debate institutions, to build a cooperative framework to promote debate

We are very grateful for the support of IDEA (International Debate Education Association) who will subsidize half the registration fee of all the participants; our organizing partners, the University of Botswana, Mokolodi Nature reserve and Phakalene Golf resort and all the others who have supported us in the past and continue to give us strength.

Registration begins on the 15th of October. We realize there isn't much time before this event, and so we using all means possible to reach out to teams in the African region. Your helping us promote and recruit teams will be really appreciated. Our vision is to create a large and representative event, that will be educational and entertaining, and invigorate growth of debate in Africa.

Second US presidential debate tonight

OK it's not university debating, and some people may say its not debating at all, but possibly the most watched "debates" around the world are those which occur every 4 years between the candidates for the US presidency.

The second presidential debate is on tonight at Belmont University. It is a "town hall" style "debate" where questions will come from the audience and on-line viewers. Each candidate will have two minutes to respond to each question.

The moderator is Tom Brokaw and as the name calling has started in the past couple of days he might have a tough job (probably not but you can hope).

The third and final debate is on the 15th October.
