JoziSpeak 2009

Wits Debating Union is proud to announce their successful bid to host the South African National Debating Championship 2009. Dubbed ‘JoziSpeak’, the Wits team plans to make Nationals 09 into a tournament on a scale not yet seen on the SA circuit. Provisional dates for the tournament are July 5 – 11, 2009, and all debating events will be hosted on Wits main campus in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The tournament budget was especially put together to allow the tournament to expand, specifically in the ESL category. Provisions have been made for the move to octofinals, and space has been made for 350 delegates. In order to combat the problems plaguing recent Nationals regarding quality of adjudication, provisions will be made to facilitate the return of experienced judges who have left the competitive circuit. The OrgCom encourages any interested parties to make contact with the Registration team as soon as details are released.

In line with our mission to make this the most epic National championships ever, the JoziSpeak OrgCom have already secured full sponsorship of the tournament. Tournament Convener Joe Roussos has sealed a deal with Standard Bank to provide financial backing not only for this tournament, but for SA Nationals for the next three years, regardless of the host.

A website will be up soon, but for now information will be shared via the SA National Council mailing list and our JoziSpeak facebook group.

Updates from Australs

The Australasian 2008 championships are currently being hosted by Ateneo Debate Society in Manila. The only updates from it I have come across are on the Victoria Debate Society blog. If anyone knows of any other sites publishing updates please let me know.

Northeast Asian Open 2008

From WUDC Mailing list

I am pleased to announce that the website for the Northeast Asian Open 2008 is now open. NEAO 2008 will be held at Nihon University from November 7-9, 2008.

The website is still a work in progress and significant updates will, no doubt, follow. http://neao2008.googlepages.com/

This is a significant event, as it represents the first major regional tournament to be held in Japan. Additionally, this marks the beginning of the rotation of the tournament out of Korea and into other parts of Northeast Asia. The tournament is open to anyone (regardless of the location of your institution).

I hope that you will consider supporting debate in Japan and Northeast Asia as a whole by attending this historic competition!

kind regards,

World Schools motions

From WSDC Blog

On behalf of the host of this year's World Schools Debating Championships to be held in Washington DC in September 2008, I hereby advise you of the motions for the preliminary prepared rounds and final.

PRELIMINARY ROUND PREPARED MOTIONS
That this house supports military intervention to deliver emergency aid in humanitarian crises
That this house believes that governments have a duty to bail out failing financial institutions.
That this house would ban the use of unethically obtained data in scientific research
That this house would make the directors of multinational companies personally liable for environmental abuses committed by their companies in the developing world

GRAND FINAL MOTION:
That this house would expand the permanent membership of the UN Security Council

NOTE:All teams should arrive in Washington DC prepared to debate both the Proposition and Opposition sides for each of the four preliminary round prepared motions.

The draw (the document listing which teams will be debating each other in each round, which teams will be in proposition and opposition for each debate, and the order in which the prepared motions will be debated) will only be released shortly before the start of the Championship.

Whilst preparing for the debates, teams are strongly advised to read and be familiar with the WSDC Guidelines on Defining Motions & Constructing Cases.

OTHER ROUNDS
All teams involved in the championships will participate in eight preliminary round debates - four of which will be prepared debates on the motions listed above, and four of which will be impromptu debates for which the motions will be released only one hour in advance.

Please note that if the total number of participating teams is an odd number, one team will sit out each preliminary round and instead participate in a 'bye-round' so four teams will debate only three of the prepared motions if that is the case.

The octo-finals, quarter-finals and semi-finals will also be impromptu debates.

For impromptu debates, the team members will be kept in preparation rooms during the hour leading up to the debate. They will not be allowed to consult with their coaches during that hour.

Under the WSDC Rules, teams may not bring any published or handwritten materials into their preparation rooms for impromptu debates, except for one English Language dictionary, one bilingual dictionary, and one single-volume encyclopaedia or almanac. They are also not allowed to bring in any devices that are potentially capable of accessing information from outside the preparation room, such as mobile phones, laptop computers, pagers, PDAs, BlackBerries, and so on.

MOTIONS COMMITTEE
Motions for all rounds of the competition are selected by the Motions Selection Committee, which consists of five members elected by the World Schools Debating Council and two members selected by the host organising committee. For 2008, the members of the Motions Selection Committee are: Ria Nuri Dharmawan (Indonesia) Hayah Eichler, (Israel), Albert Fornis (Greece), Noel McGrath (Ireland), Aaron Maniam (Singapore), Ian Lising (USA) and Justin Rodriguez (USA).

If you have any questions regarding the rules or format for debates at the championships, please feel free to e-mail me for clarification.

Best wishes and good luck for your team's preparations for the competition.
Kind regards,

Claire Ryan
Secretary, World Schools Debating Council Executive Committee

AIDA Council at Australs

Dear All,
This is an important message for institutions attending Australs 2008. It is of particular importance for those institutions that haven't attended an Australs before or for a while. I would be grateful if someone could pass this message to those institutions who are not on this mailing list but who are attending Australs.

1. The AustralAsian Intervarsity Debating Assocation ("AIDA") is the body under whose auspices Australs happens each year. The Annual General Meeting of AIDA is the Council meeting which takes place at Australs each year. The AIDA Council consists of one representative from each member institution of AIDA who are participating at the Championships, and the current executive.

2. Only registered institutions can vote at AIDA Council. The registration fee for 2008 will be decided upon at the pre-Council meeting (see below). In previous years it has been 50 AUD or the equivalent (around 2000 pesos). Registration money needs to be paidto me in advance of the main council meeting (for convenience it would be useful if everyone could do this at pre-council).

3. There are two meetings of Council at Australs each year (are presentative from each institution is required at each one). The first is known as "pre-Council" and deals with institutions seeking exemptions from the affirmative action and n-1 provisions of the AIDA Constitution. If your institution is breaching these provisions, you MUST attend AIDA pre-council and seek an exemption from Council. You will be required to explain your breach and why you deserve an exemption. Failure to do so means no team from that institution can break (either to the main or ESL break).

The pre-Council meeting for 2008 is, at this stage, set down for 3:30pm on Friday (July 4), in the Leong Hall Auditorium (the main briefing hall) at Ateneo.

4. The second meeting of Council is the full Council meeting. The agenda for the 2008 meeting is currently as follows:

1. Confirmation of Minutes of 2007 Meeting
2. Secretariat's Report
3. Report from hosts of Australs 2008 (Ateneo)
4. Report from Women's Forum 20085. Australs 2007 accounts presentation (UT Mara)
6. Reports from executive members (Vice-Presidents of Australia, Asia East, New Zealand, Adjudication and Women's Affairs)
7. Selection of hosts for Australs 2009
8. Proposed amendements to the constitution (available on this mailing list or at the AIDA website).
9. General business

The full Council meeting for 2008 is set down for Tuesday 8 July (thefree day). The agenda will be confirmed at the pre-Council meeting.

If you have questions about this email or either Council meeting, please feel free to email me.
I look forward to seeing you all in the Philippines.

Cheers,
Tom Gole
AIDA President 2008.
