Australs 08 rego closes today

The tournament may not be until July but the registration for the 2008 AustralAsian debate championships closes today 29th Feb. Also according to some mailing lists there were only 20 places left earlier today.
If you are planning to go to Australs and have not yet registered then you only have a few hours left. If you think someone else in your society is doing it then give them a ring and make sure. You've been warned!

Newcastle to bid for EUDC 09.

Hi there!
I'm very pleased to announce that Newcastle is now officially bidding for 2009 Euros. The bid is formally known as "EUDC Newcastle'09 @NewcastleGateshead" but Newcastle'09 will do in normal parlance :-)Our website/email is to follow shortly, but for now if you want any questions answered please do contact me, Russell Haswell.

We've attracted a strong team so far Oskar Avery and I are the Co-Convenors. Our CA is Sam Block, ably assisted by Alex Ward, Leela Koenig and James Dray.

We've so far very kindly received the support of many organisations which include:

NewcastleGateshead Partnership (including Newcastle City Council & Gateshead Metropolitan Borough)
Newcastle University
Newcastle Union Society
Newcastle University Debating Society

Proposed dates are July 31st-August 7th.
Our final venue (for *both* Main and ESL) is The Sage Gateshead, Europe's newest and finest opera house and acoustically the best venue in Europe (I'm told).

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more announcements coming soon about the details of the bid, and how you can get involved.

Yours,
Russell A. Haswell
EUDC Newcastle'09

Co-Convenor
Colm's Note: This now makes it two bidders for Euros in 2009. Glasgow are also bidding. http://www.glasgoweuros.com/

EUDC 2008 Tallinn updates

Dear debaters,
It is time for some updates on EUDC 2008 Tallinn. Those of you interested in the tournament - please read and remember the information below, because it may save you from considerable trouble once the registration opens. Let me remind you that registration for EUDC 2008 Tallinn opens on 10th March at 12:00 GMT. We will also be sending you a small reminder on the previous day (9th March) with the most essential points to keep in mind. But here's what you should know now:

Phase 3: Phase 3 of registration starts on April 13 and continues through May 15 (see our homepage Trounament -> Registration to find out what is Phase 3).

Registration of judges: A maximum of 4 adjudicators can be registered together with your institution's teams in Phase 1 and Phase 2. If your institution wishes to send more than 4 adjudicators, the other judges will have to register as independent judges by choosing Register as Single Adjudicator. Please note that there is no institutional cap for adjudicators, the abovementioned limitation of 4 is necessary to guarantee quicker and easier registration.

Registration of observers: Observers will not have to register on our homepage. If you wish to participate in the tournament as an observer, please send an e-mail to our Communications Director Maarja at info@eudc2008.eu. In addition to the universal participation fee of 210EUR, observers will have to pay extra 35EUR per day for accommodation at the hotel and 30EUR per day for catering and socials.

Team names: The registration form includes a dropdown list of institutions for you to choose. After you have chosen your institution from the list, the system automatically generates an abbreviation of your institution's name, which will form a part of your team's name. The abbreviation is definitive and can not be changed! The only thing that the teams can do is add an extension to the end to differentiate the teams. Teams are only allowed to use letters A, B, C etc. as extensions (no numbers, no words!). You can add your team's extension in a blank appearing after the abbreviation. A list of institutions will also be published under registration information on our homepage, where you can check the abbreviations for all institutions.

Payments: The system of payments is coordinated through our partner organisation, travel company Estravel, by our travel agent Ms Piret Poopuu. Therefore all questions concerning payments should be addressed to her. Her contact information will be disclosed right next to the invoice you receive after registration. The invoice will be generated automatically by the system after filling in the registration details. You will be able to print the invoice or make the payment by bank transfer straight away.

Cancellations: Please inform us about your cancellation(s) by sending an e-mail to our Communications Director Maarja at info@eudc2008.eu. We will process every cancellation individually to decide the amount of refund, if any, and other details. Read more about refunds on our homepage (Tournament -> FAQs) .

Visa information: Visa information has been posted on our homepage (see Info for participants). If you need a visa to enter Estonia, please contact Maarja at info@eudc2008.eu.

ESL eligibility: Every debater who has marked him/herself as ESL will be interviewed on June 22 at the hotel by members of the EUDC Council. If you are not sure whether or not you are eligible for ESL, check the definition from EUDC Constitution.

Money-off flights: We have set up a period for buying reduced rate flight tickets. Our partner EasyJet offers you reduced rate flights, using a promotional code, between April 1st-14th. Please note that the EasyJet reduced rates will apply only for routes London (Stansted) - Tallinn - London and Berlin (Schönefeld) - Tallinn - Berlin. So if you want to benefit from the discount, you'll have to connect through London or Berlin. The promotional code will be made available to everyone who has registered by the time.

In case of further questions, please contact Maarja Teder at info@eudc2008.eu.

DCU Open 2008

Dear Debaters of Iona and beyond,

On behalf of the Dublin City University Debating Society, I would like to invite you to our open competition. It will be held on the 28th and 29th of March 2008 in DCU, Dublin, Ireland.

For your €60 registration fee you will get a themed fancy dress party, loads of food and drink, great judging and motions by our CA Diarmuid Early and the chance to win some of our €600 prize fund. We also have some non-debating related games that will run throughout the competition, but we are sworn to secrecy on the details until you all arrive.

We are offering a €200 prize fund for the best pro-am team on the tab (with an am being defined as someone in their first year of university debating, excluding those who spoke or judged at Worlds this year) as well as €400 to the overall winners.

For international teams we are offering crash as well as a pick up service from Dublin airport. Cheap flights from most European cities are available via Aer Lingus and Ryanair

This will be the last Irish tournament of the year, and with five rounds of seven minute speeches will be a great way to end a greatyear for Irish debating.

Registration is now open and you can register institutional, composite and independent teams by emailing dcuopen@gmail.com

With a team cap of 32, space is limited so I would urge you to sign up as soon as you can, as well as join our facebook group at http://dcu.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7079744588

Global Debate Data

The following has been send to a number of mailing lists. If you can help Jason with the information he needs I'm sure it would be very much appreciated.

Greetings:
I am currently doing research on debate and its level of development in other countries. I am particularly interested in statistical and anecdotal data about how much debate takes place at the high school, middle school and elementary school levels in your country.

Anyone who has information about the following questions would be much appreciated:

Does debate exist in high school, middle school or elementary school?

If yes, is debate taught as an academic class? an extracurricular activity?

Is debate used to teach students English (if your country is not English speaking)?

Additionally, I am looking for bibliographic and (even better) full text articles which link debate to improved English proficiency and language skills.

Any and all help is appreciated, I am under some time pressure regarding this data,

thanks
