Tips: Fallacies

I came across a link to this page on a discussion board on another (non debating related) site. It contains a list of the various fallacies in arguments. Some of it might be useful to help organise your thoughts in opposition. Make of it what you will.

Cork Worlds 2009 DCA Appointments Feedback Process

Hi,
Applications for the Deputy Chief Adjudicator positions at Cork Worlds in 2009 have now closed.

I am delighted to announce that the following individuals applied:
Alexander Blenkinsopp
Daniel Schut
Declan Bruton
Erin O'Brien
Ivan Ah Sam
Jason Rogers
Jess Lopez
Jessica Prince
Liz Sheargold
Niall Kennedy
Rory Gillis
Steve Johnson

Anybody who would like to give feedback on any of the applicants is welcome to do so privately by emailing me at derek.lande@corkworlds2009.com.

I would request that people please respect those whom have put themselves forward by only giving feedback privately. I don't believe it would be fair for anybody to be discussed on mailing lists/message boards. A public debate would only serve to discourage people from putting their names forward in future.

Feedback is welcome from both individuals in their own capacity, as well as those representing societies, institutions and national bodies. If you giving feedback on behalf of a body of people I would appreciate it if you could clearly state so in your email as otherwise it will be taken as your opinion alone.

Feedback will be accepted up until 6pm (Dublin/London Time) on Monday the 26th of November 2007.

Regards,
Derek Lande
Chief Adjudicator

CIMB WUPID: Registration Closing Date

Greetings Debaters,
We have just finalized the trophy design for CIMB WUPID, I can’t describe it by words, but I could assure its going to be a hell of a trophy to compete for. As for the rest, preparation for CIMB WUPID is turning out really great. However, as we have recently opened up registration for teams which are not on our list, we have been receiving a lot of response from universities all over the world; nevertheless we still have a couple of more spots to fill up. So, for institutions that still haven’t contacted us and would like to participate, please do so by emailing me at ilyas@hngsc.com BEFORE 15TH OF NOVEMBER… yes that’s right the closing date for all registrations would be on the 15th of November 2007. A piece of advice from me, rego, accommodation, socials is free AND spaces are limited.

To find out more about the event, visit the official website at http://www.wupid.hngsc.com/ or read more from the blogosphere at http://wordpress.com/tag/cimb-wupid.

Cheers,

NTU Pre-Worlds 2007

Hi all,
NTU is organizing Pre-Worlds 2007. Held on the 22nd and 23rd of December, we aim to provide all with as much practice as possible with six preliminary rounds and break into the semi finals. Singapore, being so close to Thailand, is an ideal location for a practice tournament as teams going for Worlds can stop by Singapore for the tournament and can then travel very cheaply to Thailand from here.

As part of our Adjudication Core, we have on board Ankit Agarwala, ICA of NTU Worlds Bid 2010 as well as Kylie Lane. Kylie is the DCA for Assumptions Worlds 2008 and has many achievements under her belt, including Worlds Best Speaker and Worlds Semi-Final adjudicator. We hope to gain some insight to the philosophy of this year's Worlds by having her on board.
The tab software we are using is the one Assumptions is using. In fact, their team will be down here testing it out themselves, so all who want to familiarize themselves with the new system of feedback in place are encouraged to come down.

We also plan to have a rocking socials on the night of the 22nd where we plan to show you just how fun NTU has become.

For our friends staying across the seas, we are providing you with accommodation at the luxurious Nanyang Executive Centre within campus for S$70 for two nights. For those who require accommodation for their stay before going off to Thailand, we can still provide rooms for you though you would have to pay the actual price. In fact, staying over would also allow you to take the much cheaper flights available from Singapore to Thailand. Deadline for accommodation details are the 17th of November beyond which prices and rooms are not guaranteed.

The team cap we have for Pre-Worlds is 80 with a maximum of 5 per university.

For more information regarding Pre-Worlds, please drop by our site http://clubs.ntu.edu.sg/ntuworlds2010/index.php?page=prew. Registration can also be done online. You can contact us at ntuprewolrds07@gmail.com for any other queries.

We look forward to hosting you in NTU for Pre-Worlds '07!

Update on Tabbie

We've released an "All In One" version of Tabbie 1.3.1 for Windows. It contains an Apache server and MySql, needs no configuration and can be installed simply by unzipping and clicking the icon - which makes installation as simple (or simpler) than most desktop programs.

Tabbie is Tab Software for British Parliamentary Debating Tournaments. It calculates the fairest possible draw for you, based on the official WUDC rules. It has an easy to use Web Interface, allowing input from multiple computers. Tabbie is very stable - it's been around since the NTU Worlds 2004 and is the software of choice for Bangkok Worlds 2008. Tabbie is Free (Open Source) Software.

More info on Tabbie can be found at http://tabbie.wikidot.com/
Tabbie can be run online (zero installation) at http://www.smoothtournament.com/

Website update

The good people at debating.net have fixed my log on (thanks guys).

However things have been further complicated by the fact that I am currently in the process of moving house. Internet access has been switched off at our old house in Limerick and has not yet been switched on in the new house in Ardfinnan. Three months after applying I don't even have a connection date which, knowing the track record of eircom (our internet provider) means it will most likely be the new year before it gets set up.

Therefore please ignore the strange old main site at flynn.debating.net. For the moment it is best to go straight to the blog at worlddebating.blogspot.com. I will re-upload the newer version of the website to debating.net when I have access but I'm not sure when that will be.

Continue to send me (or any of the contributors) updates you would like to see posted to the site. I have e-mail access through my N95 and will post the updates when I get a chance.

Colm

update: Now that my log on is fixed I actually might have a plan to update the website without having broadband at home. I'll try to get out to the University of Limerick tomorrow and avail of their wireless internet.

TCD Hist win the UCD IV

TCD Hist (Shane Farragher & John Moriarty) has won the UCD IV. Brian O'Beirne (TCD Phil) was the best speaker on the tab. More deetails can be found at http://www.ucd.ie/lnh/index.htm

Irish Mace & Irish Times Round 1

The draw for the first round of the Irish Mace has been released and can be found at http://www.irishmace.com/

Although it has already started the draw for the first round of the Irish Times has also be found here

(for those who aren't aware Ireland has two competitions that can claim to be national championships. The interesting aspect of them is they run over several months and over 150 different teams will take part. The high number of debates means there are a lot of motions which, while many of them will be Irish focused, might be of interest to those wondering what sort of motions are currently being debated)

6th National Law School Debate - report

The 6th NLS Debate was held over four days (November 1-4, 2007) at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) campus in Nagarbhavi,Bangalore. The tournament attracted participation from 42 teams (each consisting of 3 speakers and an accompanying judge) representing 23 educational institutions.

The ‘NLS Debate’, launched in 2002 by the Literary and Debating Society of NLSIU, has in the matter of a few years emerged as the India sub-continent’s largest parliamentary-style debating championship. It follows a rigorous format modeled on international competitions such as the All-Asian championships. The six editions held so far have attracted participation not only from the best Indian universities but have also drawn teams from Pakistan and Sri Lanka. We take pride in the fact that many teams who participate in the NLS Debate go on to perform exceedingly well in international competitions.

The grand final was contested between teams from Ram Jas College, New Delhi and Faculty of Law, Colombo University. The running trophy was won by the team from Ram Jas College which consisted of Harsh Malhotra, Kartik Mishra and Prithvi Rohan Kapoor. The winning team also took home a cash prize of Rs. 18,000 -/- while the runners-up team received Rs. 12,000 -/-. Cash prizes of Rs. 6,000 -/- each were also given to the losing semi-finalist teams from Kirori Mal College, New Delhi and St. Stephen’s College New Delhi. Harsh Malhotra of Ram Jas College was declared the ‘best speaker’ of the tournament (out of 126 speakers) while Parth Mehrotra of Kirori Mal College, New Delhi was declared the ‘second best speaker’ for the same. A special prize for ‘dignified’ conduct throughout the tournament was given to the team from Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna.
