Worlds Day 3. Update 2

Motions:
R8: This house supports an independent Kurdistan
R9: This house would allow indigenous communities to sentence their own
.

Happy New Year

I'd like to take this chance to wish all visitors to this site a very happy and peaceful 2006.

I'm still waiting for further updates from Dublin but will post them once I hear anything.

Worlds Day 3. Update 1

Rd7 Motion: TTH would recognise the legally enforcable right to a minimum standard of living.

It's closed adjudication today so no official results are available. However generally speaking a two or three of teams in the top rooms of round 7 will now have the points and the speaker points to break. Below them the tension will be growing.

Worlds Draw format

Worlds doesn’t have oral adjudication for rounds 7-9. The next announcement will be the actual break. So how does this work?

In each debate teams gets 3 points for a win, 2pts for second, 1pt for third and 0pts for forth. With 324 teams the cut off 32nd team will probably be on 18 points. However so will the 33rd team and a number of teams above and below the break. Therefore the final positions in the knock out rounds will be determined by speaker points.

Once the Top 32 are determined these will be announced just after midnight tonight.

After this the draw goes into Octo-Finals
.

WUDC Day 2. Update 3

Rd6 motion: TTH would not allow the teaching of intelligent design in science class.

17pts:
UCC A

16pts:
Stanford A

(after this the list may not be complete)
15pts:
Hart House A
Hart House B
Melbourne
Sydney A
Yale A

14pts:
Chicago A
Oxford A

13pts:
TCD Hist B
Oxford B
Cambridge A
Cambridge B
Cambridge C.

I'll post the motions as I get them tomorrow but no further results will be announced until the break announcement.

WUDC Day 2. Update 2

Rd 5 Motion: TTH would give Japan a permanent seat on the UN security council.

Top teams are now Yale and UCC A on 14 points.

WUDC Day 2. Update 1

R4: TTH would prohibit women over 45 from availing of assisted human reproduction.

Known Results:
Oxford B now on 12 points. UCC A now on 11.

Thanks fo Derek Lande for the update. More to come later in the day.

WUDC Day 1

Later than planned update on Worlds. It turned out the e-mail on my phone didn't work as well as I expected (didn't work at all actually).

So an update:
There are 324 teams at Worlds
There were lots of judges. The quality was better than I have seen for a long time.
They ran slightly behind time but nothing major. Overall organisation seems excellent.

Motions: (Hope I have the wording correct)
R1: TTHW introduce an amnesty for all illegal immigrants in the United states.
R2: TTHBT the Catholic Church should allow the use of condoms in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.
R3: TTHB the west should end military cooperation with Pakistan until it holds free presidential elections
Masters semi: TTHBT human space travel is a waste of time and resources.

It is a little early to say that any teams are emerging from the pack. There will be a number of teams on 9 points. I understand these currently include Cork Phil A, Sydney A, Galway A, Oxford B and Chicago A
.

I won't be at Worlds for the next 2 days but I hope to get some updates and will post them as I get them.

Worlds Updates

Today was the briefings day at Worlds. I'm going to Dublin tomorrow and will e-mail some updates from my phone (hopefully). After that I have work commitments so I won't be at much of the rest but I will post updates as I get them.
